Rita, Sue and Bob Too (1987)
One of the funniest and sexiest films to come out of England
Startling portrait of life in the north of England one normally never sees. Brilliant, brutal, sexy, funny and full of compassion. Even though made in the late 80s, it is as valid today as it was then. Wonderful honest performances. The excellent music is by composer Michael Kamen. Clarke is one of Britains most interesting and respected directors and it is the most often repeated film on Channel Four in England.. This is an autobiographical story by teen-ager Andea Dunbar which makes it all the more interesting and compelling. Clarke was vilified when the film was first released in cinemas and accused of betraying the 'working class'. It has since become a cult classic. Check it out!
Brother Can You Spare a Dime (1975)
original and outstanding use of archive film material
this is an extraordinary use of both documentary and archive newsreel to tell a story of the depression era in the USA. No naration, the film speaks for itself. The use of Jimmy Cagney as a running character is great. Fascinating and amusing.
