Dark and Twisted
16 July 2002
This dark, twisted tale by first-time director Bill Paxton shows complex characters in a complex story that is both horrifying and utterly plausible. Paxton draws excellent performances from his seasoned cast as well as from the young actors playing his sons as children. The movie twists and turns and keeps you guessing until the very end, which will leave you flabbergasted. Good stuff!

Hilarious Parody of Country Music Star Machine
16 July 2002
This very funny parody follows the rise of the fictional Dill Scallion's country music career, including the genesis of his trademark wild on-stage dance, his first music video, and his big breakthrough at the Gingivitis Aid concert ("We must stop the madness of gum disease!" rails one character). The characters are all intentionally painted with very broad strokes, and the tongue in cheek humor keeps the movie going along at a great pace. Cameos by some country music superstars are also great fun...and even the movie's name is neat--Dill Scallion? Yeah, the guy in question is about as smart as a vegetable...and that's a big part of the fun.

Screamingly Funny
16 July 2002
This screamingly funny dark comedy gets much of its charm from the joke setups--you think you know where the punchline is going, and just as your eyes start rolling, the joke takes a left turn that is truly funny. Janeane Garofolo has some great lines and is wonderful as the irritated, eye-rolling FBI agent stuck in the middle of a podunk town suffering from a bizarre string of killings. One of her best lines is asking deputy Barney (and yes they joke about that--how could you not?) is "Would you PLEASE not. poke.the body. with. a *stick?*" Great fun, great acting, and lots of humor. "Something about Mary" this is not.

Absolutely terrifying with a shocking ending
3 March 2002
This is hands-down the scariest movie I've seen in years (with the possible exception of "The Blair Witch Project). It's taut, suspenseful, contains very few of the typical horror movie cliches (and makes fun of itself where it does).

The ending will blow you away.

Context is Key
3 March 2002
One thing to keep in mind in viewing "The French Connections" is that while it's an action movie, you probably won't enjoy it as much if you view it only on that level. A critical difference from most of the action movies we see now is that this movie is character driven.

It's also fun to know that they used very few stuntmen, that Gene Hackman did his own stunt driving (WOW. Just, wow.), and that they actually filmed the chase scene *in actual traffic in NYC.* (Try doing that with today's liability issues!)

Oh, yeah, and it's based on a true story. That's fun to know, too.
