The Three Stooges (2000)
They needed more than two hours...
While the actors portraying the Stooges were a spot on match, as was set pieces and recreations of the classic shorts, this effort for ABC fell short of my expectations.
I have been a fan for years (ever since I was a kid) and when I heard there was to be a TV movie about my heros, I was climbing the walls with excitement. But I was let down...
For starters, the Stooges needed more than two hours to tell their story. The ABC presentation was actually about one hour and forty minutes due to commercials, and this resulted in ignoring many points in their lives. They never really made a mention of Moe's daughter or how his wife felt during pregnancy, or they never featured Curly with Ted Healy. Shemp was really underused (although John Kassir was brilliant as my favorite Stooge) and the moment with the three on the beach felt a little awkward. Plus little points were switched around. In Moe Howard's book (which I have read a zillion times), he goes into explicit detail of how things were, and the screenplay for the movie totally rearranged that. They also made Moe look almost like a coward through the movie who had no intentions of standing up for his self or his partners - this was not true.
I could go on with a few more annoyances, but I won't. The movie was good and everyone did a great job (the actors playing the Stooges were absolutely brilliant) and the shorts were recreated perfectly, but the movie needed to delve into some of the background things a little more. Two hours was definetely not a nice time frame for these legends.
Friends (1994)
My take on Friends.
When Friends first aired, I thought it would be just another stupid comedy series. I had pretty much given up sitcoms for the longest while (except for reruns of Three's Company) so watching this show for the first time in 97 (at the advice of my friend) was a very judgemental viewing. I was going to be critical... ...but I shouldn't have been, because Friends was great and still is great! Now I have seen every single episode, and never miss it!
Stark Raving Mad (1999)
The very best show on TV right now...
Seeing the previews for this show right before it first aired, I was a bit weary, thinking it was just another Frasier/Friends rip off. I love Frasier and I love Friends, so I wasn't in the mood for another show just like the both of them, but what I got was something even better.
Who would have thought Neil Patrick Harris had a flair for comedy? His portrayal of Henry is a mixture between Frasier's "Niles" and Friends' "Chandler" and boy oh boy, Tony Shalhoub is brilliant as Ian, the greatest sitcom character since sliced bread. What will he do next? It's great! The other characters (Jake, Tess, Maddie) add a little flavor to the rantings of Henry and Ian.
In closing, I hope this show lasts a very long time as it really is a brilliant show and should NOT be missed!
L.A. Confidential (1997)
One of the best movies ever made...
L.A. Confidential is a thrilling film-noir about three cops who are trying to solve a mysterious murder case. On the surface it sounds like every other crime thriller, but the movie itself goes beyond that and becomes one of the most fascinating experiences I have ever had at the movies!
I must tell you, before going into the movie, I knew NOTHING about it except that Kevin Spacey was in it.
I don't want to go into plot details but will say that this movie was the best movie of 97 and probably one of the greatest movies ever made. Titanic beat this out at the Oscars? You have GOT to be kidding me. Russell Crowe should have at least garnered a nod for best supporting actor. He was absolutely stunning, as was Pearce and Spacey as the other two cops.
