Freewheelin' (1976)

I had the fortune of seeing this movie in 1997 when a friend rescued it from a bargain rack at a video store. It's kind of a staged documentary on Stacy Perallta that has little scenes with a girl(girlfriend) thrown in to give it a narrative feel. Freewheelin' is a charming look at the simpler days of the sport - before sponsors and big money took over. You won't see any vert tricks in this movie. Having said that, you get the same kind of feeling watching Freewheelin' as you would get using an abacus while the calculator lies across the room. Freewheelin' is full of integrity and genuine excitement for skateboarding on the verge of the next.

Gladiator (2000)

As good as Braveheart, but cooler.

When I saw the first trailer for Gladiator(around superbowl time), I thought about how much potential for greatness this film could possess. In a genre that has been ignored for thirty years, it's refreshing to see a movie that will no doubt be a catalyst for a surge of new epics. Russel Crowe = bad hombre. It's one thing to see a hero who displays excellent prowess with a gun - like the protagonists we love from westerns and cop movies; it's something altogether different to see a warrior slay his enemies with primitive weapons like swords, spears, and morning stars. I won't go into detail, but the battles in this movie are phenomenal. One last element of Gladiator that makes it a different type of film than Braveheart is the computer generated imaging that makes the ancient Rome real and possible for the movie. Also, this movie will probably not win Oscars like Braveheart because people viewed Braveheart as one man's(Mel Gibson) vision.

You can't not like this movie.

Blatant rip-off of Friday.

It's obvious as to what inspired Master P to make this "cinematic gem." John Witherspoon, A. J. Johnson, Tiny Lester, and several other of the actors in Hook Up were all playing their same respective roles from Friday - Ice Cube's day-in-the-life ghetto comedy.

I wish there was an original idea in this movie, but there isn't. One would think that with the collaborative effort NO LIMIT uses to write and direct their movies they would produce at least one film with substantial length or original content. Sadly, this movie falls short on both stipulations.

I hope Master P and the NO LIMIT crew had fun making this horrible movie because audience members won't have fun watching it.
