Return to Me (2000)
We love this movie. We watch it time and time again.
Somehow this movie has made it onto our "watch it again and again" list. Even though we know exactly what's going to happen, it's a sweet story, well told, well written, well casted, well acted. It's got everything if you like "romatic comedies" or "romantic drama."
They've done a good job weaving hints at things later revealed into the early parts of the movie. I won't give them away, but the more you watch it the more of them you see.
Yeah, and it's quotable, too:
"your ass is ringing" "I don't want Swiss water" "This is Bob. His wife is dead." "No one is going to notice your chest"
Her Best Friend's Husband (2002)
I hated this movie - unrealistic and too many logic errors
A wife is suffering because she is nearly an empty nester. She refuses to tell her husband word one until "I want a divorce". Nice. The best friend tries to help her out, and gets the "go away -- no come back" treatment. The husband doesn't even TRY to make it work. And nobody has answers for the daughter "It's complicated" -- hey, I'm adult, not a 5 yr old -- how about you explain it to me, OK? And then, the best friend somehow falls in love with the husband? She could do better. And she should! Hello, it's your BEST FRIEND's HUSBAND.
Oh, yeah. And him "Uh, you didn't return any of my calls. Did you get them?" - hey idiot, here's 100 dollars, buy a clue. No return calls = I don't want to talk to you.
Ugh...I can watch most of what LMN puts on when the wife has the remote but I walked out on this unrealistic debacle.
Pretty Woman (1990)
Good for watching and re-watching regularly
Great chemistry between Robets and Gere in this movie, something I'm sure the producers of "Runaway Bride" hoped to re-create but weren't successful. Lots of great lines, quotes that'll live on and are fun to anticipate the third, fifth or however many times you watch it. My wife loves this film, and watches it at least once or twice a year. Somehow, as long as it's been at least 6 months, I don't get tired of watching it with her.
The Right Stuff (1983)
Faithful to the book and a great movie too
I lived through the period of the space war - I was just 11 when Alan Shepard flew his sub-orbital flight. I watch this movie every time it comes on TV. Great writing, acting, filmography, and it is reasonably faithful to the book. Tom Wolfe's novel focussed on the American Space program as a form of "single warrior combat" with the Russians, and the movie does depict that, although it's hard to pick that out as the theme of the movie, whereas you can't miss it in the book.
However, as both entertainment and history, the movie is a solid hit. I highly recommend it.
