Spoof of famous celebrity hangout The Cocoanut Grove
29 November 2004
Early animation short most notable for the fun trying to figure out who the caricatures are. Most are very easy for an old movie buff but a few might be a challenge. The dance described in the previous review where Oliver Hardy is concealing the fact he is dancing with more than one woman with his back turned isn't in this short. That segment is from a similar cartoon titled Hollywood Steps Out that came a few years later and also included Hollywood stars in a nightclub. This nostalgic little cartoon was shown by Turner Classic Movies as part of their Cartoon Alley. I decided to set up a TiVo season pass for TCM cartoons after watching this one to see what other treasures might show up. I do hope the stars weren't offended by their appearance in this cartoon. One of Hollywood's greatest will be pictured as a horse now whenever seen in a film by this reviewer.

Credible, emotional drama.

I don't really understand why this is so lowly rated as of the time of my review. This is a serious drama, competently directed and believably acted by all. The story held my interest and the wonderful Kyra Sedgwick delivered another good performance. As is usual for me, I haven't read the book and knew very little about the story before watching. Unusual for me, I watched it despite the low rating here and I am glad I did. I am sure the character played by Kyra Sedgwick couldn't be farther from who she really is but she sure knew what she wanted to do with this part.

If you want comedy or action, other films should be considered. If want to think about life, love, parenthood, and dying, this one should hold your interest.

Dogfight (1991)

A simple story beautifully told
19 March 2003
Lili Taylor and River Phoenix are perfect for this simple little story about a young marine in town for a little fun before being sent to Vietnam. I had never heard of this kind of dogfight before. I hope it never really existed but whether it did or did not exist doesn't affect this terrific little film. Great use of pre Beatles 60s music and the film adequately captures the mood and feeling of the time.

If you are over 50 now, this one will stay with you for years after you watch it. Films are at their best when the most effort is spent on performances and storytelling. I like big budget nonsense films as well as most anybody but the films that stay with me are often the simple heartfelt stories somebody has to tell. Congratulations to all involved. Dogfight is an absolute bullseye, dead center on target.

Pretty good nonsense with many beautiful unknown actresses
6 January 2002
After over 30 years this film is much better than I remember it, having seen it when it was first released. After a recent viewing, I have decided to find other Russ Meyer films to watch. Whatever you want to call it - soft core porn, trash, or in poor taste it is very entertaining if you are in the right mood. Mid to late sixties Playboy centerfolds are in this movie along with other mostly unknown extremely attractive actresses. This story of a girl group making it and the weird people encountered along the way is not all bad. Much more entertaining than Rocky Horror in my opinion.
