The Rutles 2: Can't Buy Me Lunch (2003)
Hi, Im (insert big studio name here) and I wont release this movie and Im stupid
So here it is 2 years after Cant Buy Me Lunch has been finished and STILL no distribution? I'm growing a little concerned with our society in general when Charlies Angels 2 is welcomed with open arms and a gem like Rutles 2:Cant Buy me lunch doesnt see the light of day. This is a fantastic sequel to the classic original. All the key elements are here the interviews with all the celebrity guests (especially Gary Shandling) are hilarious! I saw this in a theater full of people and everyone seemed to genuinely enjoy it. The bits with Jimmy Fallon are a little weak but Shandling and Steve Martin are extremely funny. We need to get Idle in some more films! are you listening Harvey Weinstein?
The Virgin Suicides (1999)
Sophia coppolaa pulls off an almost mystical triumph
I was completely floored by Sophia Coppola's "The Virgin Suicides". The story is great, the acting is great, the directing is great. Her use of dissolves and choppy editing make for a fantastic moody feel. The atmospheric music by Air along with a wonderful soundtrack of seventies pop hits pushes this film along nicely. The scene where we meet Trip, The high school stud, played along to Heart's "magic man" is unforgetable. Kirsten Dunst is the epitamy of beautiful and I fell for her from the get go. She exudes confidence making her character almost unearthly. This is a film not to be missed.
Jerry Maguire (1996)
interesting love story
this is a suprisingly good effort by cameron crowe offering a very realistic approach to the love story theme. Cruise is excellent as always. I don't necessarily see an oscar in Gooding's performance though he was the ideal person for the role. One problem: when Cruise's character tries to break things off with his wife (kelly preston) she resorts to beating him up. Sterotypical hollywood approach. The only real embarrasing scene in the movie in terms of lack of realism. Excellent direction overall with some nice surrealistic qualities (which is why I'm suprised this movie did so well). Kudo's to cameron crowe. 8/10
Blood Simple (1984)
lesser coen brothers effort
I don't think this film holds a candle to the other Coen brothers films and should only be looked at as a kinda student film. a freshman effort and that is that. The film is certainly dated and doesn't give much a payoff. There are a few excellent scenes overall and it is very well written. Only hardcore coen brothers fans should apply. Do check out some of the scene transitions Joel uses. An early example of the greatness to come. 5/10
The Thing (1982)
Classy remake of an old classic.
I was very suprised at how well The Thing has held up over the years. I saw it when it originally came out and only recently saw it again. Thinking I knew the movie and what was going to happen, imagine my suprise when predictability did not set in.The paranoia that sets in as they men try and figure out who's real and who isn't is fantastic and similar to "Invasion of the body snatchers". Their are fine performances especially by the underrated Keith David And the open ending is particulary cool. This is John Carpenters best work. one problem: The monster looks really stupid. important lesson: less monster, more suspense. The film still comes out with flying colors. 9 out of 10
