Fight Club (1999)
There are good, bad and outstanding movies and there is a "Fight Club"
Some movies are good, some are bad, some are neither, some are outstandingly awful and some are outstandingly brilliant. "Fight Club" falls into the last category. Sit in the dark and see a dark movie and remember that the pitch black is really the insides of a man's brain. This movie is not a "refreshing break from the mould" - it is a new mould unto itself (much like "Matrix" was for Science Fiction). When you have seen enough movies for a long enough time, you begin to feel that human imagination is limited after all and you will hit this wall. "Fight Club" is defined outside of the walls - the theory of relativity introduced to film making. Palahniuk, Fincher, Norton and Pitt - four men together with their versatility and talent gave us a breakthrough movie just in the nick of time to make it one of the greats in the first millenium Anno Domini.
Random Hearts (1999)
Poignant movie with a built-in "Randomizer"
In more recent movie times, we have come to see several movies with almost parallel story lines released in a cluster (remember - "I still know..." & "Urban Legends" -- "Matrix" & "Thirteenth Floor" & "Existenz" -- "Sixth Sense" & "Stir Of Echoes" ad infinitum......) What's that about anyway? No doubt, each cluster had a worthwhile movie in its midst but if you are an unsuspecting movie goer, no doubt you have seen two or even three of these in a row!
"Random Hearts" does not pretend to be a "different" movie but it certainly is built around an oft-used-but-still-fresh kind of plot. We see above average performances from both Ford and Scott Thomas. [Ford's wife and Scott Thomas' husband die at the same time in a plane crash leaving their spouses to discover that each was being cheated by a now-dead wife/husband]. Ford plays the intense internal affairs cop who finds that his late wife had been cheating on him -a large part of the movie revolves around his obsession with the details of this affair. Scott Thomas (a congresswoman of all things) has suffered a similar fate, her late husband was the one involved with Ford's wife. So what then? After much obsession, both come to terms with their losses and the infidelity of their spouses! In the process, an uneasy but strong bond develops between the obsessed...
Some parts of the story do not come together very well but overall, a good movie in a very random kind of sense.
Grey Owl (1999)
In a world of grey dullness, Grey Owl is slightly colorful
We have come to judge a movie (any movie, most movies) as they compare to counterparts (notwithstanding Einstein and relativity).. in that vein, relative to other movies I have seen in the last little while, Grey Owl does transport you (albeit in fleeting moments) to the original greatness that embodied this man. And that's all you should expect to experience if you go see this movie. Pierce Brosnan doesn't cut it as an Indian obviously and most of the movie plays like a cliche (with Annie Galipeau contributing in very large measures). But in the midst of all the stilted moments, Sir Attenborough's directorial prowess is very much evident. More a documentary than a movie and certainly no "Gandhi".
