Brilliant

Rather than wasting your time with an in-depth review, let me get right to the point by saying that this show just about gives me a heart attack every time I watch it. I've watched a LOT of TV in my life, and I can say with some confidence that this is the most suspenseful show ever made.

Deep Rising (1998)

Famke, Famke, Famke
11 September 1999
I was really expecting a bomb when I checked this movie out from the library, but, WOW! it was pretty darned good. Very, very derivative of Aliens, but who cares? The monsters were creepy, the action clipped along, the script was intelligent, and the actors did their job (especially Famke.) I give this excellent film a rating of...drum roll please...3 out of 4! (Famke gets a 4 out of 4.)

The Vanishing (1993)
Hmmm...2 versions. Which should I watch?
21 August 1999
As everyone who has reviewed this film here has mentioned, there are two versions of this movie, one Dutch, one American, both directed by the same fellow. Which should you see first? Which should you avoid, if any? Decide for yourself... I saw the Dutch version in 1994, and it absolutely blew my socks off. I was horrified, didn't want to keep watching it, but I was pulled in and couldn't stop until the brilliant, ultra-chilling, uncompromising finale. This was my first foreign film, and so I was completely unprepared for such a non-Hollywood experience. I will remember this movie for the rest of my life. Later on, I caught the American version in the theatres, watched it, a few thrills here and there, yadda, yadda. Jeff Bridges was pretty creepy, but quite frankly, I would have completely forgotten about it by now if it weren't for the original. It's not horrible, it just pales in comparison to a masterpiece.

How? Why?
8 July 1999
Take "BAD" and multiply it by the number of stars in the universe and you might come close to describing this movie. It almost has to be seen to be believed. As I watched "Rollerboys," I kept thinking: "How, how, how do movies like this ever get made?" In that sense, this movie grabs you. It spirals down into the depths of "awful" and "cheesy" and you just can't pull your eyes away. Haim should've taken the money and ran. He could have gone to college and become a doctor instead of a complete embarrassment.

Wild Things (1998)
Bad, but in a good way!
14 June 1999
Denise Richard's success as an actress comes from the way her breasts distract you from her horribly wooden acting. That's OK though, because there's a lot to like about this movie. The REAL actors, like Matt Dillon, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Murray put on a great, campy show with lots of plot twists, murder, suspense, and even more plot twists. I especially loved the three-way sex scene where Neve Campbell keeps her clothes on till the end, finally exposing her bare back, while Denise puts on quite the soft-core show with Matt. Because, you see, Neve isn't THAT kind of actress. No nudity, her contract says! Anyway, zap that microwavable popcorn and turn out the lights, because this movie is well worth renting.
