The Matrix (1999)
WOW!
This is one incredible film. When I first heard about it, I thought to my self that we were going to get another trashy cyber punk film with Keanu looking pretty and acting poorly. And then I saw the trailer for the film in the cinema. It held my attention and I was discussing it with a friend during the film I originally went to see. And then the time came to seeing the film itself. Oh My God. Not many films have made my jaw drop in a long time. In fact, the last one I can remember was Jurassic Park back in 1993. The film grabbed me from the very beginning, and I was speech less when I left the cinema. I thought that the story was very original, and the action beats any Hong Kong export that I've seen to date. The film was so spectacular, it was like watching a live action cartoon. Very simular to a Manga animation film. Outrageous Kung Fu fighting, impressive action sequences (particularly the lobby shoot-out), and the acting pretty good aswell. Keanu was surprisingly impressive in this, Lawrence Fishburne was as good as he always is. Carrie Ann Moss is someone I think we will see a lot of in the future. But it was bad guy Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith that caught my attention the most. He played the role very well, and had all the best lines. I have seen this 5 times already at the cinema, and will see it again easily. One of my favourite films of all time, and certainly the best action film this side of Asia. I await for parts 2 and 3 in anticipation as the Wachowski brothers stated that this was part of planned trilogy. Move over Star Wars, the new ultimate Sci Fi film has arrived for the new millennium.
Lat sau san taam (1992)
Superb
If anyone likes their action films high-octain and very loud, and very, very violent, then this is the film for them. Director John Woo has surpassed himself in this film by making what is without a doubt the most flamboyant and OTT action film put onto film.
Chow Yun Fat has proved that no one can handle guns in a two fisted gun battle better than him. The action sequences don't come much better than they do here, and the climatic battle in a hospital lasts a staggering 45 minutes, which includes a superb long shot following Fat and Tony Leung through corridoors, up an elevator, and along another corridor.
I strongly suggest that you watch this and enjoy what is easily the finest film to come out of Hong kong, and certainly John Woo's finest hour.
Jubilee (1978)
PANTS
I have only one word for this film. Pants!.
I watched this film in college as part of a Media & Culture lesson, and I felt that this was a complete waste of time. The film had no reason, no story, and above all, made no sense. This is without a doubt, and I say this with my hand on my heart, that this is the WORST film that I have ever seen in my whole life, and I doubt that I will ever see anything worse than this in the future. And I didn't even get to watch all of it because the lesson finished. I would like to see the rest of it, but only to see how the ending could maybe improve an already messed up film. This makes home movies look like major Hollywood productions. Avoid at all cost, and if anyone you know talks about it, and says that they liked it, I strongly suggest that you make new friends.
True Romance (1993)
The Best Movie Ever!
This is without a doubt my favourite film I've ever seen. It has an original story, although it does nick stuff from every lovers on the run movie ever made, and I personally think that the acting is superb, pariculary from Dennis Hopper, and surprisingly Christian Slater. There are a number of characters in this film that although they are bad at times (Gary Oldmans pimp 'Drexel' for example), you actually start to like them.
The scrpit is very funny as well, although maybe a little corny at times. There are also a number of what I would say 'classic scenes. Two of them being the brutal beating of Alabama in the motel room, which shows an effective use for a toilet seat. And probeably best of all where Dennis Hopper gives his history lesson to Christopher Walkens mob leader about the origin of the Sicilian blood line, concerning a lot of bed hopping involving black people. This scene is both intense and funny, which will keep you giggling on the edge of your seat.
Overall, this films deserves to be seen by anyone who likes their films funny, and very violent. try to see it in widescreen if you can, and hopefully the directors cut, which has a lot more of the violence in it. Although I suggest not for the faint hearted.
See it ASAP!
