Avalon (1990)
One of my all-time favorites
30 November 2000
As a descendant of immigrants I can also identify closely with this movie. The most interesting facet as the film progresses is the ever-present television and the gradual way in which the lives of the characters (and our own lives) become almost controlled by it. The Thanksgiving dinners with the whole family give way to small, silent, routine affairs in front of the TV.

The ending always brings tears, as does the realization in many of us that a way of living has been lost and we are not the better for it. Seeing the grandson explain to his little boy about Sam's arrival in America (in 1914) leaves one with a sense of the importance of holding onto some of the past.

Largo Desolato (1990 TV Movie)
Very well done

This was on PBS as an episode of Great Performances. Very well done, even the turn by Cates as Leopold's young love interest. I guess being married to Kevin Kline rubs off.

The most frustrating thing about this presentation is that it is unavailable on video, anywhere that I have checked.
