Very good movie
18 September 1999
I went to see this movie simply because I enjoy Michael Goorjian and I knew he was starring in this movie. I dragged a couple of my friends to it too, they weren't expecting anything too great, but we were all pleasently surprised. Michael Goorjian was excellent. I was also pleased with the performance of an actor that I don't remember his name now (I was hoping to find it on the imdb but it isn't listed) but Canadians will remember him as the "If I wanted water, I would ask for water" guy from the beer commercials a few years back. This guy can really act! Anyway, it was a very good movie, and it was nice to see a canadian movie that is not simply about being stereotypical canadians! If this movie is playing in your city, take a chance and go see it, you won't be dissapointed.

Newsies (1992)
Such a surprisingly great film
10 June 1999
I watched this film after being pestered by my friend who absolutely loves it. I didn't understand why. It looked downright silly to me, but I borrowed the tape and popped it in one night when I was bored out of my skull and found--to my complete surprise and shock--that it's REALLY a great movie! I found myself instantly wanting to watch it again and again, and wanting to acquire a copy of the soundtrack (which has been discontinued) so badly that I resorted to paying over $60 for a used copy. This is a REALLY good movie! It has a certain charm to it, especially (ironically enough) in its many flaws. Find a Newsies site and look up the bloopers list. It's quite long but you'll find you'll enjoy the film even more with these little quirks (like someone tripping over their own feet in a dance number, or two boys giggling and sharing a glass for a toast because they were only handed one). The singing and dancing is great in that you know the actors are not professionals at that sort of thing, which goes well with their charactors, a sort of rag-tag bunch of young teens. The characters are all pretty adorable in their own ways. I really didn't think this movie would be any good, so I'm SO happy it turned out to be one of the best movies I've ever seen. If you want a really cute, campy, uplifting, fun movie, go rent Newsies, you'll be pleasantly surprised. I know I was.

Buuuuuuuut Daaaaaaaave Foooooooleeey's Iiiiin Iiiiit!!!

Alright, crappy movie, but Dave Foley's in it! Which automatically makes it at least MARGINALLY amusing. The only reason I rented this movie (and with a very red face as I went up to pay for it) was because Dave Foley (who plays Chris, Pat's equally androgynous lover in the movie) is a comic genius and my favorite actor in the world. Now if Dave HADN'T been in it would I have enjoyed it at all? Hmm, there's a question, I may have enjoyed the singing of "La Freak" but that's just because I'm a sucker for disco music too! But anyway, Dave Foley is great (not like this movie encourages greatness on ANY possible level, but anyway) and he is strangely attractive as a woman (as observed MORE than enough in his Kids in the Hall days). If you want a funnier (albiet, still a bit silly) movie with Dave Foley in it, opt for "The Wrong Guy", Dave co-wrote and stars in it, and the band Barenaked Ladies is in it as an added bonus. Dave Foley rocks!

Simon Birch (1998)

Very, very good film.

I REALLY enjoyed this film. I figured that it might be good, so I decided to go see it and it FAR surpassed my expectations. I haven't yet read the book, so I'm not sure if my response to it would be different if I had, however my friend who saw the film with me had just read the book and he enjoyed the film as much as I did. This is a touching and funny film, and though it is manipulative in parts as the critics claim, it isn't horribly so. Though I must admit the music (esp. the 60s tunes) did get a tad distracting. Ian Michael Smith as Simon, does a very good job, esp considering that this is his first acting job. But Joseph Mazzelo is AMAZING. This kid is about the only child actor that I actually really enjoy. He has SO much talent and I cannot wait to see him in future projects. Go see this film if you are interested in being entertained, and touched by a warm and inspiring story. Don't bother if you are a film critic! Because obviously they have no clue how to spot a really good film when it is right there in front of them. Great movie.
