And so it ends with a FX bang and a whimper.
First the good stuff. Patrick Troughton is a class act, as always. And rocking a grey beard, which seems to be his own.
And Gerry Sandquist as Malic slimes like the primordial ooze. He gets all the best lines, even if some of them "borrow" from Earth's Romans.
Problem is the episode makes no sense. Watching to get any backstory on the Dorcons, the Psychons, or the S1999 universe at all? Forget that. How did the Psychons and Dorcons develop such a parasitic relationship with the latter? Why does the one Dorcon battle cruiser with the supreme leader who needs Maya happen to stumble across her and the wandering Moon? If the Dorcons need Psychon brain stems, why didn't keep some Psychons around in case--I don't know--the Psychons went extinct. Like they did.
But forget any of that. Watch Koenig crawl around ventilator shafts like Rollin Hand's buddy Barney from Mission: Impossible. Watch Catherine Schell either scream in hysteria, or grab a nice nap while Maya is waiting for a transplant. The rest of the Alphan crew do nothing for 40 minutes.
And if the Dorcons want Maya alive, why don't they first beam in an armed assault squad, instead of opening fire to destroy the entire base?
Although two of the Alphan no-names are willing to hand Maya over to the Dorcons. What does the mostly human crew think of the Psychon in their midst? What happened to them afterward? Were they court-martialed?
But forget any story depth. Just enjoy the pretty colors, the big bangs (but no theories), and what turned out to be the series finale.
But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?
