Inside the Career of Joe Dante (2021)
Disappointing
When you see a title like that you have an expectation of a thorough career review not a jump around this one but not that one experience. What is here is solid but unexceptional. I don't think i learnt one new thing about Dante but at least i always enjoy hearing him talk about movies with typical zeal.
Better Call Saul: 50% Off (2020)
Better than Breaking Bad?
I find this show more compelling than Breaking Bad. Don't get me wrong I love BB but the slow burn of this show is just so perfectly calibrated it is like a great novel. Every character is interesting and well drawn, every sub plot thought through and followed through. The style is amazing, there are a number of sequences that had me glued to the screen in this episode - like the elevator scene or the hysterical drug fueled opening or Mike berating his granddaughter. I've only given this an 8 as I am convinced that as usual the filmmakers are going to ramp it up and give it their all and I need somewhere to go later in the season.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars: The Phantom Apprentice (2020)
Dumbfounded and speechless
There is digging deep and then there is this. I am honestly lost for words at the depth of quality of these episodes and if they maintain it to the end this is going to be the most important phase in the history of Star Wars since "Luke, I am your father".
Better Call Saul: Magic Man (2020)
Solid magic
A very solid opening to the season. I feel like this show has a very locked in formula but it is so subtle it is hard to put my finger on it and it is entirely possible I am just making the whole thing up. The b/w scenes, the one scene (in this case, the Magic Man scene) that relies on an over abundance of style including fast cutting and specific music or song choice.
This show and this episode in particular really highlights the poisoned relationship between Jimmy and Kim and every time he corrupts her just a little bit more my heart just breaks for her a little bit more.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Old Friends Not Forgotten (2020)
Gobsmacked
First ever review which is strange considering how long I have been a member. I honestly didn't think animated Star Wars could be this good.
No scratch that. It makes most of the Star Wars films look like ok fan-fic. This is a stunning piece of work from start to finish, from top to bottom. The script is golden, the underlying themes respect its mother material but is willing to question it as well. The dialogue is zingy but it also knows when to shut up. Every time they could have pulled an animated cliche out of its rabbit hat (and lord knows in the history of this show it has been guilty of it) it does an about face and presents real characters faces with real decisions and real moments of hubris.
The acting is astounding. There are subtle inflections of voice and deflections of eye line that create so much humanity and relationship and tension and care it's kind of breathtaking.
I have never given anything a 10 before mainly because I believed there is no so thing as perfection. Well I have changed my mind. The Adventures Of Robin Hood is perfection. The Wizard of Oz is perfection. Psycho is perfection. Raiders Of The Lost Ark is perfection. This is perfection.
