Director Stephen Bisaccia and producer Gregory Hardman ideated this short film as summer roommates in Los Angeles. Bisaccia has spent much of his life working in a church, while Hardman was charmed by his experiences with the Uber drivers he met while commuting to his internship at 20th Century Fox. The pair wrote Father Don as an embodiment of the priest/Uber driver duality.
The car scenes in this film were shot using a process known as a "poor man's process trailer," in which motion is simulated by displaying moving footage onto a projector that can be seen in the car's rear window. Although Hardman and Bisaccia were initially interested in including more car scenes in the film, the majority of them were cut due to budget restrictions.
