the adaptation from the light novel is remarkable
maxi_testa7 March 2019
Besides the tipical isekai theme, the series has a quick start with the characters accepting just from the first episode that they are in another world. This could seem bad for a development, but its very refreshing and let the series take another view (which is, of course, the main plot from the series). Our protagonist is betrayed from the very start and makes him to see the wonderful isekai world in which he was invoked as it is in reality, a normal kingdom with all its fails and trash. From that point our protagonist evolves in such a smooth way that you dont remember the last time he didnt taste food. the soundtrack is wonderful, following the pase of the series perfectly and the seiyu's have made an excelent job voicing naofumi, filo and the racoon loli. the animation is acceptable, with some fails, but those dont ruin the experience. my score for the series is 8,5/10 and as a personal opinion a 9/10

Uneven
b_raven1 July 2022
Season 1 is great and somewhat new approach to the Isekai/video games genre (similar in concept to SAO), but Season 2 is very uneven at best. Half season full of plot holes and bad CGI, and second half of S2 feels like a whole new season, but creativity and originality is taken far back seat, and I'm being very polite about it.

S1 - 9/10 S2 - 6/10

Feel free to skip the very last episode of S2 as it's adds nothing of value. Basically it's collection of few cut scenes from S2. Nothing more.

WHAT SWORD ART ONLINE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE

New and fresh anime. It gets interesting every chapter, and It's quite nice to see the development of the characters. Good animation, nice intro.

Definetely worth it if you are looking for something like SAO was supposed to be.

Incredible

Since Berserk blasted its way to the top of the charts, there hasn't been a halfway decent fantasy anime out there... not until The Rise of the Shield Hero. This show excels at the fantasy setting. It's both fun, lighthearted and cheery, as well as dark, brooding and intense. After Berserk, been searching for a replacement fantasy anime series for the past 10 years. This is it. I'm impatiently waiting the next episodes. Well done, guys.

Very Good!

Fantastic show!

Just got into it recently and got several episodes in. I've never read the light novels but this show hits all the marks and beyond for its genre. You don't even have to be that big into Isekai to really get a general feel for it.

Coming from a guy who rarely watches anime, this show keeps bringing me back for more. It's comparative to God of War (2018) and Game of Thrones. Such a great story about a guy who's lost it all in a parallel world and now has to rebuild his entire reputation from the ground up.

Each episode introduces something new and refreshing and it definitely keeps your attention.

Get into this show NOW!

This series declined after season 1
dalvinmulindwa1 July 2022
Season 1 was good but I must say this series went down the wrong path in season 2. The acting just feels empty for season 2. It's like they were just trying to give screen time to every single character. The series is meant to be a journey for the shield hero. But season 2 just keeps introducing new characters who the viewers have no attachment to.

The animation is okay but the fights lost how intense they were in season 1. For example the fight between shield hero and glass in season 1 was awesome. But season 2 makes glass look like some side extra .

Season 2 of the shield hero was disappointing.

Season 1: heaven- Season 2: hell
kirisspamimdb4 July 2022
I loved the first season so much. 10/10.

But the second season was straight horrible. The pacing was off, the dialogues bland, generic and childish. I really wanted to love the second season :(

Refreshing.
Me_KC5 July 2019
I liked how the humble beginnings of the main character came about. Despite the fictional theme, many will surely identify with the hero. This gave me a taste of online gaming (which I'm not very fond of) in a good way. The story didn't feel complete to me though, especially the end. I haven't read the manga version but I do hope a continuation/second season will be released soon after.

Amazing.
invisibleunicornninja16 January 2019
As of me first writing this review, only two episodes have been released. I'll probably update and edit this review once season one is over.

The animation in this show is just absolutely spectacular. The visuals are gorgeous and the constant fluidity of character motions is impressive. The voice acting is on point, as well as the sound design. The characters are interesting and I was fascinated for the entire runtime of episode one. The second episode, while standard length, was still entertaining.

*a few episodes later*

Why are most of the animals in this show bad CG?

This show is just slow. Probably wouldn't be still watching if I hadn't read the manga and knew what was going to happen. Honestly this show could've been a lot better.

*after season one finale*

ok that was pretty good. I would recommend. be warned as It is slow.

Season 2 Review
RebelPanda1 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Countless anime transport you into fantasy worlds filled with excitement and wonder, far from your dreary, everyday life. Then there are anime like Shield Hero's second season that make you wish you were doing homework instead of watching it.

The Rising of the Shield Hero season two is a significant departure from the first that will disappoint fans, but I'm just here to say, "I told you so." For starters, Shield Hero has abandoned its revenge fantasy premise. The shield hero has already risen, gained redemption, got his revenge, and now people cheer for him and his overpowered crew like he's another generic isekai protagonist. The "Waves" are still a threat to the kingdom of Melromarc; the main goal no longer hinges on fighting other humans.

The new enemy is a Guardian Beast, the Spirit Tortoise! This was awful when I tell you this arc was boring even by Shield Hero's astronomically low standards. Shield Hero has never been an impressive spectacle, but Kinema Citrus hit a new low with this level of stiff animation, flaccid directing, and outright lazy artwork. They seem to have taken inspiration from The Promised Neverland's second season by trying to torture unsuspecting fans. The Godzilla-sized CGI tortoise is the first major fight of the season. The hideous CGI quality couldn't even pass in 2000, let alone in 2022. Four episodes of painfully bland exposition build-up to the fight; it's like witnessing a slow-motion trainwreck. Forgettable politicians and heroes from throughout the world come together to spout exposition.

In traditional Shield Art Online fashion, Naofumi and his team of girls are too overpowered to lead a compelling boss fight, but the battle is dragged out over multiple episodes. For all the preamble, the war was about as exciting as watching paint dry. To mask the lack of animation, the artists utilized bright lights and cheap visual effects; the brown and green color grading is so over-done that it looks like someone smeared mud matter over every frame. The longer the show goes on, the more the characters start to look like wax figurines melting in the Summer heat. Their facial features appear distorted; even during still shots, the anatomy seems bizarre. I'm no doctor, but I'm pretty sure you're eyes are not supposed to be different sizes. The only thing I can thank for the production is rehiring Kevin Penkin as a composer. Penkin carries the whole show on his back with another top-notch orchestral soundtrack. It fits the tone like a square peg and a round hole, but it's a welcome distraction from the monotony and visual terrorism.

Naofumi, Raphtalia, and Filo add a new member to the wife squad, Rishia, a magic-user from a noble family. Amazingly, she has even less agency than Raphtalia and Filo and is even more desperate to please Naofumi. I couldn't believe my eyes when she begged the shopkeeper to become Naofumi's property. In retrospect, I should've expected the Rising of the Incel Hero would continue pandering to the lowest common denominator. Once again, they lampshade the owning women problem by claiming it would make her stronger. Hopefully, no one needs me to explain why it is very bad for an anime to argue that men enslaving underage girls is for their own good. Rishia is dead weight aside from her underutilized translating skills. Her character arc peaks when Naofumi utilizes her for misogyny-fueled power that requires him to choke her and call her a w-word (which she thanks him for). After being introduced, she stares at the screen and vomits her life story onto the unsuspecting audience as if we care. Her flashbacks have a white filter because Shield Hero doesn't trust its audience to have comprehension skills. Unsurprisingly the only dialogue between Rishia and Raphtalia is to eagerly compete for their master's attention. Meanwhile, Filo's role is blissfully reduced until they figure the only way to generate sympathy is by making her a damsel in distress, but the Shield Hero kind. In other words, she gets tortured onscreen by sadistic kidnappers.

The second newly added prominent character is Ost Horai, the familiar of the Spirit Tortoise, but she quickly abandons that role in favor of helping Naofumi. Ost is a guide rather than a person, leading Naofumi's party to slay the beast. She never rises above a plot device for all the show's efforts to make us care about her. They've given us a charmless, vapid plot device without a single spec of sympathy, then pleaded with us to worry when she is put in danger. I mistook her vacant demeanor as enigmatic and wrongly assumed she would become the villain. That role is reserved for a much worse figure.

An insufferable Vassal hero is the season's non-threatening antagonist, but at the very least, he provides a distraction from the tortoise nonsense. What motivates him? Insanity and sexual sadism. Much of the runtime is wasted chasing Kyo, the comically evil villain, through an alternate universe. Kyo is also known as the Vassal Book Hero. For the uninitiated, Vassal Weapons are wielded by Heroes who have been chosen to protect the world (you're still reading this, right?) from the Waves of Calamity and Guardian Beasts (have you fallen asleep yet?) like the Spirit Tortoise. You'll need to check the wiki to fully comprehend the endless list of names, backstories, and convoluted lore. The slideshow animation lends itself perfectly to the monotonous script consisting of one long-winded explanation after another. Speaking of dialogue, it consists of exposition dumps, video game lingo, and medieval formalities; if I hear Raphtalia shout "Naofumi-sama!" one more time, I will lose my mind.

The second half of the season attempts to start fresh. Seven episodes are wasted establishing a new setting populated with so many cardboard cut-out caricatures you shouldn't even bother memorizing their names; ultimately, they're irrelevant to the first thirty episodes. The heroes teleport to an alternate universe because no one cares about the original one. One of the other world's cardinal heroes, Kizuna, joins the crew. Her legendary weapon is hilariously lame, a hunting tool that prevents her from attacking humans. Despite being eighteen, she looks like a twelve-year-old. Naofumi immediately nicknames Kizuna "loli-hag" because she is not a preteen and, therefore, too old to join his wife squad. All of the other heroes surrounding Naofumi contain no personality and only exist in terms of their special weapons. There's no character development for the original cast, and these episodes do nothing to build upon the overarching plot.

Eviscerating Shield Hero to this extent gives me plenty of pleasure, and it would be dishonest to do anything else. It doesn't rise to the level of cheesy enjoyability because it was agonizing in every category. There's nothing here beyond hours upon hours of tedium. Even worse, the studio involved was so certain, so arrogant about the anime's potential that they resorted to a filler episode at the end. The post-credits scene is meant to tease the third season, but it's more like a threat that there's more torture in store.

Great Series, but S2 is trash
rocketcityoffroad17 June 2022
The first season was 10/10, but the second season, in comparison, is an abomination. As of right now, not a single episode of season 2 is worth watching. They are all dreadfully dull and watching them is a waste of time, but season 1 was good enough that I keep watching in hopes it'll get better.

Different and Deep
Cafelar10 April 2020
Outside the context of this type of anime, going to a magical world can be traumatizing, selfish and non-altruistic actions, this anime builds its script and characters very well, giving the right depth with a tone of emotion.

It's really worth watching, and Raphtalia is incredible.

A must watch Anime!!
kaustubhpoondir7 April 2019
I suggest anyone who is reading this comment to start watching this masterpiece.I just loved the soundtracks, the story, the emotions and the concept of this anime.

The sheild hero is awesome even after so much of exploitation and false blames he still fights for good but because of this his trust towards other people has broken.

I am ANIME :zero Peace✌

One of the Better Isekais
rookescanor4 June 2020
One the isekai anime from 2019, I'd say it's one of the better shows in the genre. To begin with, during the first few episodes, it seemed obvious of the pitfall the protagonist was going to face. But despite that, the overall drama was done well in those episodes, and pretty much enjoyed the growth relating the protagonist Naofumi and his team.

An anime made by the studio, Kinema Citrus, I took up 'The Rising of the Shield Hero (will be referring as Shield Hero)', because of the studio's reputation from its previous amazing production of the anime, Made in Abyss. Appreciating the wonderful art and music from Made in Abyss, Shield Hero had both. Kevin Penkin returning with another score, I'd say that the music was decent, but not great. It doesn't come close to Penkin's work in Made in Abyss. As for the graphics, Shield Hero has indeed better art and character design than many others in its genre. Character designs were decent enough and can appreciate Kinema Citrus's effort into it.

Now, regarding the story, despite being an isekai, it has its own sets of original ideas, with more than simple plots into it. There's no point in discussing the story, but on average I can say it's decent and enjoyable. But the one thing I did not appreciate much as the other factors were the characters. I'm not saying they are bad. As a matter of fact, they are much better than the original SAO (and the only SAO I've watched. Rest are intolerable), where the characters were simply horrible. The characters in Shield Hero lacked characteristic ingenuity, which is a common occurrence in other isekais, the ones which are average. In other words, the writing had less life into it. Naofumi and Raphtalia, being the stars of the show, have the most described writing, detailing their characteristics, and yet there's a blandness in them every so often. The lack of character dynamics and the delivery of often monotonous dialogues.

Dialogues were often monotonous, cliché and within rare times downright cringe. For the most part, I did not feel the depth within the characters, which connect viewers to these characters' lives.

It can be believed that isekai are inspired by the RPG/JRPG games from the olden days, but speaking of those games, many of them had amazing script throughout the story. Indeed, old 8/16-bit games (Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda) have inspired new original stories into full-on Television series, but fundamental qualities are there no more.

Some of the originality concepts of Shield Hero also comes into question, when Filo, one of the protagonist's companions is a downright a Chocobo rip-off. Who cares if she has a human side? That's just fanservice anyway. Braggy/cocky characters with literally no cognitive abilities to think, are another stereotype shared with other trash isekai shows.

Unlike Made in Abyss, Kinema Citrus has done a poorer job in the production. Fast-paced plot amongst the episodes often left me wondering when the protagonist lands in a new location without any indication. That also included in the build-up of suspense during action sequences. The script is partly to blame for this.

But despite its pitfalls, Shield Hero is one of the good anime of 2019, if not great. Despite the pitfalls, Kinema Citrus had done a better job than other isekai anime.

It was an overall good experience, and look forward to the show's coming seasons. Hoping the writing and overall character dynamics would improve, it would be a better show to watch. Shield Hero can be said pretty much a common man's isekai starter.

Overall: 7/10

Masterpiece
danielsuarez-735075 February 2019
I might be jumping the gun calling this a masterpiece when only 4 episodes are out but it is truly amazing. The voice, animation and just all around it really is a good anime. I can say it's really good and I've watched over 100 animes. Recommend it a lot.

A Man, a Raccoon, and a Chicken walk into a bar...
JonnyDonny32119 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
At a glance, The Rising of the Shield Hero may look like another "I'm stuck in another world" anime (isekai). And on first impressions, it does fall into the same formulaic tropes we've come to expect from these shows. However, if you look close enough there is a story to be enjoyed with dynamic characters and compelling drama. And while it doesn't quite break the molds of anime cliché, it still can make for an entertaining 6 hours. Let's start with the characters. All characters presented are all consistent and serve a purpose in the plot. As well as staying consistent they are also dynamic and have complex backstories that aid their development. It's really gripping to see how Nao interacts with his environment and the people he comes across, and how his party reacts to his behavior. The conflict that arises when Nao's morals comes into his decision leave you always wondering what he is going to do next. The supporting characters to Nao's story only help to solidify his ties with the people around him making for unique situations between the people he dislikes. The only time a character doesn't work is when the narrative feels compelled to put the main plot on hold for a backstory. For example, around Ep 15, our side character Raphtalia, has several flashbacks of being a slave when she was a child. It wouldn't be a problem to have a backstory episode, however this completely drags the pacing down as our heroes need to find a way out of the castle they have infiltrated. There are many of these slow down moments cut in between action shots which kill the pacing to a grinding halt, especially in the final confrontation. The animation is quite good concerning movement and design of the figures. Its fluid in the action sequences and done in way that engages the viewer, for the talking shots, a lot of anime use the slowly tilt up shot while characters exchange dialogue. Shield Hero is no exception as it uses these endlessly for almost every piece of dialogue. There is also a big use of flashbacks and shots of characters that don't move and make single response answers: Something is considered lazy in some respects. Sometimes they make use of CGI to render in bigger objects and complicated movements of many figures, it looks good enough to not bother the viewer nor is it used to often, however there are many shots that last too long, so the bad CGI starts to get noticed more. The animation is crisp and is only aided by the music which can inflict emotions on the viewer. From raging battle ready, to soft and melancholy, the music is expertly crafted and tailored perfectly to fit within the narrative. To conclude, The Rising of The Shield Hero is a well-crafted anime show that can be enjoyed by anyone. While the narrative is trying hard to break the clichés, it just barely breaks the form previously established by other isekai anime (which isn't aided by the already oversaturated market). However, if you can ignore the anime tropes, there is a lot of enjoyment in Shield Hero. Good story, compelling drama, and wonderful music has others eagerly waiting for the next chapter in Naofumi's story. 7/10

Warning: Spoilers
This anime is freaking awesome I really recommended for the people I don't know why people are so blaming about the slavery the trading in the unfair things that happened on the first episodes, this anime is awesome Im out of words and really recommend for anyone to see it. It has potential to be with the top ones like Dragon Ball or One piece. This is much better than Goblin Slayer or Sao. Last but not least I really enjoy Naufomi and Raphtalia together I wish they would explore their further relationship and love in the further future and even married and have children at some point. IT'S FREAKING AWESOME WATCH IT PEOPLE, HELP THE CASO THIS ENEMY CAN GET TO THE TOP AND WON'T BE FORGOTTEN LIKE THE REST OF THE ANIMES.
