When the family enters the Canadian border, a Royal Canadian mounted police (RCMP) officer dressed in a traditional "Mountie" uniform greets them. That is not what Canadian border officers look like. The uniform is similar to American border officers or modern police uniforms.
When the family crosses the border into Canada and back into the United States at Alaska, it appears they use drivers licenses. After the events of September 11, 2001, you need a passport in order to cross the border between Canada and the United States.
