In the opening montage at the Clarke household, Katy Clarke is seen reading a book called "Fogdancing" by "Max Shea". In the original comic series Watchmen, Max Shea was the writer of the pirate comics series "Tales of The Black Freighter". The comic also details that when he finished working on Black Freighter this is one of the books he wrote.
Angela returns home to find Cal reading the classic novel Things Fall Apart by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe. She spoils the plot for Cal by telling him, "Okonkwo hangs himself at the end." This episode's title, "If You Don't Like My Story, Write Your Own," is a quotation from a 1994 Paris Review interview with Achebe.
