- Kwesi's plants are wilted. All except one plant are dead. Lu and Kwesi think this is a miracle.
Matt is brought back into the Mars mission support team to deal with the on-going water problem on the Atlas. The backup system has been working for a month, but 2 months are still left to reach Mars and it's a fickle system. One of the recommendations to boost water flow is to route the back-up DA through the primary filtration pipes. Matt's team starts working on a plan. Misha is in constant touch with Matt and keeps him more updated on the systems as compared to mission control.
Ram carries out psych evaluation for his fellow crew members and is concerned with Emma's short temper (She sent a message to Alexis and she failed to respond for more then 2 hours, making Emma irritable). She is also coughing a lot. She is stressed about Alexis having a boyfriend, who is 2 yrs older to her, riding dirt bikes and has a KIA father. Plus, she is not there for Matt when he has needed her the most. Emma also gives up on Misha and tells him to go ahead and go blind as Misha clearly doesn't care for Ram's instructions to stay in his cabin. Lu thinks that Emma can't accept that Matt is Alexis's parent for the 3 yrs that she is away..
Alexis lies to Matt that her friend Annie dropped her home, when Matt saw Issac drive away from the house. Matt pulls up Alexis for disobeying him and continuing to ride bikes with Isaac. Alexis thinks Matt doesn't get her and writes to Emma about Isaac and how she feels about her. Alexis says she feels free and liberated when she is with Issac. She can be herself, and is not weighed down by her daily problems when spending time with him. Alexis receives a message back from Emma disapproving of her relationship with Isaac (she says boys at this age are nothing but a distraction); Alexis is distraught & rides a dirt bike recklessly and has an accident.
As Emma's stress grows, Misha reaches out to Matt. Matt has a session with Dr Putney who suggests that Emma might be stressed as Matt is not fully in charge of Alexis, maybe because he is injured and is also doing the job of 30 engineers all by himself.
Matt was with Melissa when Alexis had the accident. Matt messages Ram and asks him to tell Emma in person. But Lu is against this. Emma walks in on the conversation and Misha tells her. EMma feels she should never have left Earth. Ram is appointed the temporary commander by the crew. Lu figures out that Emma is dehydrated, after having used some of her water ration to keep one of Kwesi's plants alive.
Alexis is fine. Together Matt & Alexis send a message to Emma, letting her know that she is fine. Ram administers a saline drip to Emma to hydrate her.
In flashback, a younger Emma in NASA training learns that she's pregnant and fears it will destroy her career, but she decides to keep the baby, with Matt's support. Emma knows that when Melissa got preggers, she was dropped out of the program, but Matt points that Melissa chose that. Emma goes to meet Melissa, who tells her that the choice to remain in the Mars program is still hers. Emma is on the verge of giving up the pregnancy, but steps back at the last possible moment before taking the test flight that could have caused harm to the baby.
