With the advent of airbags, it was no longer safe for kids to sit up front, so kids had to sit in the back. Sheldon got carsick in other episodes (including on The Big Bang Theory (2007) ), so he'd probably want to sit in front as you're less likely to get sick. However, it was established in multiple episodes that Sheldon prefers to sit in the backseat because statistically it is safer.
The controller Sheldon is holding is for a Super Nintendo but the console they show is a Nintendo original and they are 8bit but the box says 16bit in the show so they used a mix of controllers and boxes and didn't use the regular Nintendo parts except the console
