Patience goes unrewarded
nascent_cinephile13 July 2022
The camera in Pompei, aka So Long Billie, meanders as slowly through pretty, vacant countryside as the script does through its young characters' pretty, vacant lives. And that's pretty darn slow. Demanding a patience that is not rewarded by its ending, Pompei may end up feeling like the longest pretty, vacant 90 minutes of its viewers' lives.

Huh? Why did that happen?

Warning: Spoilers
I thought this movie was pretty cool but then it ended and I didn't understand what was going on.

The plot is that Victor meets this girl named Billy and then they really like each other but for some reason the gang that Victor is in doesn't like her. That's already a place where I got lost. I don't know why they didn't like her.

Victor's younger brother Jimmy is going to turn 13 and so they have him lose his virginity and then I guess he has to kill someone? That's how you become a man in this gang that they're in? But I don't think the movie ever said that's what was going to happen. The younger brother shoots the girl but it's off screen and it's at the very end of the movie.

The leader of the gang beat up Victor and then Victor just sat in his car while Jimmy killed the girl. But I don't get why that happened because Victor was going to take Jimmy and the girl and leave the gang. I don't know why he changed his mind. Cuz he got beat up? Really I don't get it.

On the plus it really was an immersive experience. The grungy kids in this French desert that looks like New Mexico scraping by and living weird lives was need to see.
