The only (?) film directed by a divine being (?) is a commercial for a Buddhist organisation
Osel Hita (Torres) has been in the news since shortly after his birth in 1985. When he was 2, he was taken from his family in Spain to Tibet, where the Dalai Lama confirmed that Hita was the reincarnation of Lama Thubten Yeshe (1935-1984). The boy was worshipped almost as a god. But when he came of age at 18 he renounced his ties to his Tibetan monastery and returned to Europe, where he studied at film school in Madrid. Although he has taken part in several film and TV productions, "Being Your True Nature" is to date the only film he has directed. It's a promo for a Buddhist organisation, the Foundation for Developing Compassion and Wisdom, begun in 2005, and it was shot at one of its "gatherings" in France in August 2011. A succession of talking heads praises the aims of the FDCW, which broadly speaking are to promote peace, and we see a lot of happy, smiling people participating in exercises which are not explained. Considering Hita has studied film, it's surprising that he hasn't been able to communicate essentials. It must also be said that giggly Lama Zopa must be one of the most inarticulate interviewees ever put before a camera. Clearly Hita remains an advocate for Buddhist ideology and he comes across as sincere. Buddhists and their sympathisers may be tempted after seeing the film to attend gatherings, which continue to be held throughout the world. Others may be deterred by some wild generalisations, such as Andy Wistreich's that most people only gain happiness by going to the shops and buying more possessions. Hita himself claims that we cannot gain satisfaction from entertainment. But (on a shallow level perhaps) there is some satisfaction to be derived from this little film co-directed by someone who for sixteen years was regarded by all who met him as a divine being.
