Partially good, partially really bad

This is "Constantine: The Legend Continues", a television special from 2018 that runs for slightly over 40 minutes, so still fits in the short film category. Director of this DC-themed film is Doug Murphy. It is a mix between animation and interviews basically. This was made to promote not only one, but two shows, first of all the new season of Legends of Tomorrow, second of all the new show City of Demons and the character of John Constantine is featured prominently in both of these. So Matt Ryan, the (voice) actor playing Constantine is in it from start to finish. We see him talk to another actress from LoT during the non-animated parts and speak about their characters and which ways they have been heading and may head in the future. Add to that an interview with writer/producer Phil Klemmer who surprisingly manages the impossible to add even less interesting aspects than the two actors. He is not in the studio though. I must say I am not (yet?) familiar with any of the two shows featured here, but Ryan felt very wrong to me, not just in the studio, but also the scenes we see from his character. Far from a good actor from what I have seen here. But honestly I am not surprised because superhero shows are really many out there right now and it is definitely a case of quantity over quality in probably 90% of the series. Kinda fitting they quoted the abysmally unrealistic arrow as an inspiration and part of the journey on one occasion. I cannot really say too much about Macallan here. She is not as painful to watch as Ryan, but probably not much better either. Their jokes and seemingly spontaneous moments are not exactly well-delivered and yes I know the comedy component plays a big role here, but still. Apart from that there are basically two kinds of making-of/behind-the-scenes documentaries out there, number one are those that are really insightful and tell us something new, number two would be these gloating over their project and telling nothing you wouldn't know if you haven't seen the series. Also really cringeworthy how before one commercial break they talked about the producer I mentioned telling something new about the upcoming season, which is also a lie of course. But yeah, if you cannot any film/series making creativity, then all you can do it not give any too early spoilers. Kinda fitting this one guy from Prison Break (the older brother) is in the show because he is really also all about muscles and physical stature with very little acting talent. I am sure the description "style over substance" fits the show nicely. As for the animated parts, they are clearly superior and at times fun to watch that I got a bit curious about the series they prepared us for. Maybe I will check it out at some point. Some of the creatures look interesting for sure and the story doesn't seem too shabby either. Same can be said about the animation. But sadly, these animated parts are constantly interrupted by pointless banter and interviews. This would have been much better as a 20-minute animated short film. Oh well, atg least the animation kept this from being a complete failure that it would have been if we had to stare at Ryal so full of himself for the entirety of the film. Watch something else instead, maybe the animated series this is about.
