Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams in Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)

Goofs

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

Edit

Continuity

As the Dutch spokesperson is about to reveal who gets the 10 points from the Netherlands, they're shown to be the 20th country out of 42 competing ones to vote. But in the next subsequent cut, when Iceland receives those 10 points, the Netherlands suddenly become the 40th country out of 42 to vote.
All the counties that were voted in the first 6 country voting, are moving to the top of the list, but also remain in their original position, thus appearing twice. It happened to Greece, Sweden, The Netherlands, Spain, Iceland and Latvia.
The Americans' rental car is right-hand drive, which makes sense since they are in the UK. However, during a close-up when the driver operates the gear stick and steps on the gas, the gear stick is operated by his right hand and he is seated on the left, indicating a left-hand drive car.
During the Song Along scene, Loreen can be seen walking with the hedges either side. During the back shot, it seems as if she has walked out from the hedges and is in the open. However, when they cut back to her face, she is still in between the hedges.
After Sigrit adjusts her dress, her hairstyle changes from half down to an updo.

Factual errors

The five biggest financial contributors to Eurovision go straight to the final without going through the semi-finals. These countries are Spain, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, the so called "Big Five". In the film, Spain and the UK sing in the semifinals, something that has never happened in the history of the festival. The result screen also shows all the Big 5, while in the real contest they would only be shown at the finals. Also, the host country has a guaranteed place in the final too. Since the contest was being held in Edinburgh, that means the UK would have been in the final anyway even if it wasn't already a member of the Big-5.
The Eurovision song contest only allows 6 performers on the stage - including dancers. Several acts in the movie had over 6.
Live instruments are not allowed in Eurovision, and plugin instruments on stage are strictly forbidden. This means Will Ferrell's character would not been able to use the piano on stage and just start playing a new song. While live instruments are banned on the ESC in the mid 2000s there are however exceptions for usage of instruments, e.g. the German band "Texas Lightning" in 2006 and the singer Tom Dice who performed "Me and My Guitar" playing the guitar in 2010 for Belgium.
There is no announcing of the jury points in the live telecast of the Semi-Final. Instead, the 10 countries that proceed to the final are announced in a random order. The points are cast as seen on the film only in the Grand-Final.
Icelandic names must conform to a set of rules, standards and restrictions by law to be permitted as legal names for Icelandic citizens, and practically none of the names of the "Icelandic" characters as written (except Ragnar and Anna) adhere to those rules.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

When the countries give points to other countries, the caption reads Netherlands during what sounds like Poland's turn, but it's actually the Dutch's turn.
While announcing the finalists, the countries are shown on the screen. Russia doesn't appear in all top ten countries, yet Russia wins the whole competition.

However, all the participants (except the contributions from the host country and the Big 5 - France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, who just vote in one of the semi-finals decided by draw) are competing in one of two semi-finals held over two nights before the finale. Since Russia doesn't figure in the first semi-final, it follows that they were competing in the second semi-final.

Revealing mistakes

Although he plays an Icelander, Pierce Brosnan's accent is closer to Norwegian, especially in the second half of the movie.

Miscellaneous

When where the Fire Saga band go to the ESC welcoming meeting with the head of the EBU: one of the many flags on display is a Dutch Antilles flag flown horizontally among others. This is incredibly unusual since the Dutch Antilles was dissolved as a nation in 2010, and also because it never appeared at the ESC.

Anachronisms

In the opening scene, set in 1974, the Icelandic viewers of the song contest are shown to be drinking what appears to be beer. Beer was actually illegal in Iceland from 1915 through 1989. Smuggling of beer was widespread and "near beer" at or below 2.25% alcohol content was allowed. The scene may also be depicting an alternative beverage.
When Sigrit is in the hotel room singing/writing her song, she's playing the piano on a Yamaha DX7 synthesizer. The DX7 has neither speakers nor does it have a realistic piano sound.
Lars and Sigrit were portrayed as school-aged children when Abba sang "Waterloo" on Eurovision in 1974, meaning they are both in their 50s during the present day in the movie. However, at the end of the movie, she and Lars have just had a new baby, even though Sigrit would be past the age of menopause.

Errors in geography

There is no gravel road on the route from Húsavík to Reykjavík (at the very least not the route a bus would go). When the bus is seen travelling past Goðafoss waterfall it is on a small eventual mountain road that does not take you to Reykjavík. The actual route does indeed go past Goðafoss waterfall but it is on the other side of it and is fully paved.
The venue shown as hosting the Eurovision Song Contest in Edinburgh is actually the SSE Hydro, located in Glasgow, nearly 50 miles apart between the venue and the capital's city center.
Before the first Fire Saga gig in Húsavík local pub ¨Skipstjórakráin¨, the camera opens with an aerial night view of the town towards the venue where it can be seen in the middle of the coast in front of the staircase that lead to the local church uphill, but on a later day light aerial view of town, the same spot in front of the church shows an open parking lot, and the Skipstjórakráin pub can be seen nearly 100 meters away on the right side of the coast, where it actually is.

Plot holes

The whole film revolves around the head of the Icelandic Eurovision committee not wanting the country to win because if they win, the country will have to host the following year, at great financial cost. Whilst it's a tradition that the winning country hosts, they can actually nominate another country if they are unable to do so.

Character error

Sigrit says that they have to go to the "Artists area" It is well known among the ESC fans that that place is called "Green room" It's possible that as it's her first time in the contest she didn't know that. Almost impossible if she is a fan of the contest.
