Trivia

Actress Charlotte Hope's auburn hair, pale skin and light eyes match what we historically know of the real Princess Katherine's physical appearance. Although a Spanish princess, she was not Hispanic or Latino. As the show points out in the second episode, she had English ancestry (John of Gaunt). John of Gaunt had Spanish ancestry (e.g. Eleanor of Castile) and was married to Constance of Castile, also a progenitor of Princess Katherine, who was quite mongrelly like most European royalty. Like "Wolf Hall," a different spin on the Tudors
18 May 2019 | by narrator56See all my reviews

I have watched the first two episodes of The Spanish Princess and hereby declare it entertaining enough overall and worth watching, I guess. Of course, historical dramas rarely stick strictly to written history, and personally I don't care if they do as long as the show is fairly intelligent and holds my attention. I read history books and watch documentaries when I want to stick to the facts. And what are facts anyway, when most history has been written by the winners? If facts were readily available, historians wouldn't still be arguing about Richard III.

Still, I had to chuckle when they introduced prince Henry, Arthur's younger brother. I read that he was 11 years old when when Arthur's intended bride arrived on England's shore, but in this production Henry looks to be in his mid to late teens. This was done for one reason, to add sexual tension between him and the Spanish princess. Premium channels must have sex in their productions. And speaking of the young Henry, I don't like him in this series. He is kind of a jerk. Ah well, perhaps he is channeling his future self.

So I will keep watching it. It is interesting to see a familiar story told from a different angle, like they did with Wolf Hall, presenting Henry VIII and his court from a fresh perspective of Thomas Cromwell.

I looked at the reviews on here after watching episode one, and was taken aback by all of the one star reviews and venomous insults, along with misspellings, typos and poor grammar in places. That treatment is usually reserved for politically liberal slanted movies, or remakes of beloved original films. This show doesn't seem to fit those patterns. But then I saw the phrase "political correctness" and I glanced at the cast list. Aha. A few people of color among the leading roles. (At least one of them seeming to be historically accurate). Good old fashioned racism rears it's ugly but all too familiar head. All is explained.

Meanwhile I will wait for episode 3 to see whether this series can maintain its admittedly precarious hold on me.
