While Scots have been in North Carolina since early settlement of the colonies, the first large group to emigrate to North Carolina were from the Highlands. They settled near the Blue Ridge Mountains because it reminded them of home.

The Cherokee dialect of North Carolina is considered severely endangered, and lower dialects spoken on the South Carolina/Georgia border have been extinct for over 100 years.
