Iewduh
kp632321 November 2019
Some unforgettable characters, their stories, fantasies growing up in their own reality and that famous market in Shillong, through Mr. Kurbah's lense which appears like a womb holding them all, together; That's what 'Iewduh' is, a film that stays with you even when you're on your way back from the theater through a busy and loud weekend street.

Characters write the screenplay in ÏEWDUH, and everything that happens - happens because of what they are.

ÏEWDUH is Pradip Kurbah's finest work, an amazing film about humanity and how a positive outlook can affect the lives of others. I laughed, I cried; try not to find out a lot about "ÏEWDUH," because I think it gives a better experience when one doesn't know a lot of where this movie goes. What I will say is that the movie's message is incredibly powerful: it worries more about persistence, love, and protection of closes ones to keep them sane. Everything is good and warm in this movie; everything is fresh and vivacious, understandable and well performed. There's something about Albert Mawrie (Mike) that makes you want to grin. Maybe it's the anticipation that you'll see him get away with something. He's the only Khasi actor who knows the angles. His screen persona was established for all time, Baia Marbaniang (Priya) what a discovery, how skillfully an actor can connect naturalism with the laws of performance, and shows the most convincing emotions coming from any character I've ever seen, You can simply feel the progressive collaboration that occurred between Albert and the other actors and the mutual understanding they developed, and it's not often that you see that kind of artistic superstructure shining on the screen so much as it does here, and that has made possible is all because of a very well structured screenplay by Paulami Duttagupta, Lionel Fernandes and Pradip Kurbah. The most curious aspect to a story such as this, involving such unduly, diverse characters: a miserable loner Lamare, a zesty, and a sensitive and insightful Hep, most of the character are in their distinct differences, they share many of the same problems, and these problems eventually bring them all together, I appreciated practically every element in this wonderful, delightful masterpiece of exemplary storytelling, in its indelible acting (Kim Jiseok Award very well deserved), its imaginative, Cinematography by Pradip Daimary (This was neons above "ÏEWDUH quality) and its comforting morale, that despite all of the odds shooting in such a crowded lanes of the market manage to capture the essence of ÏEWDUH. A brilliant film, which shows how art can triumph, PK really manages to show the beauty as well as the cruelty of life. I have been so much against this particular film and I don't deny that but after watching "ÏEWDUH" PK, "You have actually made me want to be a better man."

Simplicity at its best

Warning: Spoilers
Ever since the project was announced, I was eager for the movie, so one can say I've waited for more than a year for this movie. I want to thank the whole crew. The actors in the movie are memorable with Mike being my favourite. One can relate to the lives of these characters, they are just like everyday people which is what makes this movie even more beautiful. The story of this movie is simple yet beautiful, it isn't exaggerated or overdone and shows how these people help each other in a small or big way. Mike couldn't help Priya much but his act towards Bah Lamare touched my heart. It shows that not all the time can we be heroes. The crew that made this movie possible? Hats off to them. Shooting in such a crowded place with regular people rushing through the narrow lanes is challenging and the crew really accomplished it beautifully. Last but not the least, Director Pradip Kurbah. He's a man whose work have always been amazing. The only movie I was not able to watch was Ri. Onaatah was a really beautiful movie and the same can be said for iewduh. He takes topics and turns them into beautiful stories. I'm always eager to watch his work and I hope to see more in the future.

12th BIFFES Review: Iewduh / Dull Drama / 3 Stars
nairtejas4 March 2020
Iewduh (Market) looks so good on paper where a market narrates the story of its inhabitants, but when it comes to its visualisation, it ends up as any other romantic drama with some notable characters that have shades of unusual humanity, making the whole affair a tad dull, especially if you compare it with all the other ways the story could have been turned into. TN.

(Watched and reviewed at the 12th Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFES).)
