Whitney Sadler is a dynamic force on social media, and what she sells primarily is her own brand. Her personality has attracted entrepreneurs like H2Almond and the finest boutiques to rely on her to pitch their products.
But the downside of Whitney's work is that she has apparently attracted multiple stalkers because of her presence on the internet. The harassment, as well as the tragic deaths of her parents, has led her to move from L.A. back to her home in Boston.
Almost instantly upon her return home, Whitney is attracted to Mike Vincent, a young man in the neighborhood caring for his mentally unstable "mother" Kathy. But virtually everything that comes out of Mike's mouth is a lie. Whitney's savvy sister Megan gets wise to Mike and does some research to learn that he is a fraud. But Megan's efforts are nearly in vain when Mike abducts her.
The filmmakers were stretching to try to develop a highbrow theme about "authenticity" with Whitney learning how to be more genuine in her internet pitches. But the message rang hollow as she was perpetually seeking "new beginnings" but never really changing. Was there really a "new Whitney" by the end of the film?
"Web of Lies" became increasingly unpleasant as the revelations piled up about Mike's violent behavior. By the homestretch of the film, the experience was grim in the sordid basement of Mike's home. It was especially disturbing that Mike would kill Whitney's parents in the attempt to get her to return to Boston.
By the end, Whitney wanted greater abilities in "self-expression." But to do so, she needed to shut down her laptop and relate to live human beings in person in order to get out of her rut in the fantasy land of virtual reality.
