- Burnham receives the reunion she's been longing for, but it doesn't go quite as she imagined. Georgiou and Tyler sense a disturbing change in Leland.
- When the Burnhams' laboratory was attacked by Klingons years ago, Michael's mother donned the experimental time travel suit to go back in time an hour and warn them of the coming attack. She instead arrived 950 years in the future to find all sentient life destroyed by Control. Control detonated anti-matter explosives all over the Galaxy and wiped out all sentient life.
Tethering herself to a nearby planet, Dr. Burnham made over 841 attempts to change the future, including moving humans to her new planet, Terralysium, to test how she can change history. Meanwhile, Gabrielle's suit is still tethered to the past and it is trying to pull her back 950 years into the future. Eventually, Pike is told, that the Universe will win this tug-of-war. Pike orders Culber to resuscitate Gabrielle so he can question her.
Trying to stop Control from gaining the Sphere's data, Dr. Burnham was responsible for directing the Sphere to cross paths with the Discovery.
The present control has captured Leland. Control says that it cannot operate via holograms forever and needs a flesh body and a face. Control has chosen Leland. It penetrates Leland's body with millions of Nano machines that are designed to remotely control all aspects of Leland's body and thought. Through Leland, Control, tells Tyler and Georgiou that the woman captured by Pike is not Gabrielle, but it could be a clone of Gabrielle, sent by the future Control to get the Sphere data from Discovery's data banks. Control getting hold of the data is how it gains consciousness. Leland orders that he wants to hold the data in his custody on his ship.
Gabrielle gains consciousness but wants to talk to Pike and not Burnham. Gabrielle asserts that as long as Control gets access to Sphere data, everything will die, always. She says that she knows nothing about the seven signals and wants Pike to delete the Sphere data archive to protect the future. Saru says that deleting the Sphere data is like destroying the library of Alexandria. But Pike orders the same. Saru discovers that he is unable to delete the data archive. The archive builds firewalls around it, to protect itself.
Tyler reports to Leland that the Discovery team tried to delete the data archive and the archive protected itself. Burnham defies orders from Pike to beam down to the surface and speak to Gabrielle. She tells Gabrielle that they were unable to delete the data. Gabrielle says that she has seen Burnham die a hundred times already and will see her die a hundred times again. She says time is savage and time always wins.
Spock theorizes that they are missing something. Instead of destroying the data, they can focus on merging it with the river of time itself. Now, the Discovery crew plans to upload the Sphere data into the suit and send it to the future where Control cannot access it while keeping Dr. Burnham in the present. They plan to use the dark matter energy from the asteroid to generate enough energy to sever Gabrielle's link with Space time and to keep in the present. Leland convinces Georgiou that allowing Gabrielle to leave for the future with the Sphere data is like inviting their own disaster. He asks Georgiou to place a device close to the suit, that will allow him to steal the data transfer. A Control-possessed Leland intercepts their upload with the help of Georgiou who beams down to the planet to meet Gabrielle and place the device close to the suit.
Talking to Gabrielle, Georgiou realizes that she used some phrases for Control, that Georgiou heard from Leland. Georgiou talks to Tyler and confides her suspicions. Georgiou and Tyler confront Leland. Control-Leland stabs Tyler & he is gravely injured but able to warn Discovery.
Control-Leland beams down to Gabrielle's position and attacks the security around her. The crew is forced to cut the transmission short and release Dr. Burnham back to the future, with the suit now damaged. Control-Leland escapes with half of the Sphere data.
