Conspicuously, neither of the two species living on Kaminar are called "Kaminari." This is an inside joke for people who speak Japanese as "kaminari" is Japanese for "thunder."
The scenes walking along the beach approaching Saru's home village is set at Scarborough Bluffs / Bluffers Park just north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, along the shores of Lake Ontario.
For those left wanting to know more of Saru's family than just his sister, and needing some insight into how the Kelpian culture deals with their miserable circumstances, a short film titled "The Brightest Star" is available as a DVD extra.
The pylon in Commander Saru's home village is the same design as the obelisk from The Paradise Syndrome (1968), just turned upside down.
Footage of Saru's departure from Kaminar is reused from The Brightest Star (2018), however, the registry on then-Lieutenant Georgiou's shuttle has been altered. In the original footage, the shuttle was marked "SHN 03," implying it came from the ship she would later captain, the USS Shenzhou. Here it is stated that the ship was the USS Archimedes.
