- Burnham is stunned when she learns her ties to Section 31 run deeper than she ever fathomed. Armed with the identity of the Red Angel, the U.S.S. Discovery goes to work on its most critical mission to date.
- While preparing for Airiam's funeral, her system is purged of the Control virus along with all other Control systems around Starfleet. Cornwell, Pike, and the crew discuss that a future AI infected Control and Airiam and used them to alter the present, and thus shape the future.
While doing the purge, Tilly discovers a bio-neural scan of the Red Angel in Airiam's code that matches Burnham. Burnham is now convinced that somehow she is time travelling from the future to prevent a Galactic catastrophe. Tilly also found a file on project Daedalus. The group discusses that Control might be deliberating misinformation to the group via Airiam's memories and database.
Leland and Georgiou reach the Discovery and beam aboard. Leland says that only the Red Angel has answers to the questions they have. So, he proposes to capture the Red Angel and to make it work for them.
Leland reveals that Section 31 built the Red Angel time travel suit twenty years ago in a temporal-arms race with the Klingons. Klingons were working on time travel technology and Starfleet wanted to make sure that it matched pace. The project was called Daedalus. The suit was on the verge of being tested when it was destroyed by Klingon spies. The suit works by creating micro wormholes and the worn hole has to be kept open by Tachyon radiation for the person to return back to their originating time. The suit also contains a tether through the wormhole to the original time, and when the mission is over, the person is pulled back by the tether. The suit itself is powered by a time crystal.
Saru does not trust Leland and thinks he is not being totally honest. Stamets proposes building a phase discriminator to Depower the suit. But the equipment requires the equivalent of 12 warp cores to power. Georgiou suggests using the Sector 31 testing site at Essof IV and use their plasma engine to Depower the suit.
Burnham confronts Leland and asks him to come clean about everything he knows. Leland reveals Burnham's biological parents had been part of the Daedalus program. They worked on creating the time travel suit. The suit was missing a time crystal enabling it to jump through time. Leland bought some crystal off the black market and kept it with her parents at Doctori Alpha, to hide it from the Klingons. But Klingons picked up the trail and reached Doctori Alpha before her parents could be safely evacuated. Leland's carelessness at the time led to their deaths.
Spock discovers that the Red Angel specifically appears whenever Burnham is in immediate danger. Spock speculates that it is the Grand Father paradox. Future Burnham is saving the present Burnham to save her own future self. The crew now plan to use Burnham as bait for the Red Angel. Discovery travels to Essof IV, where there is enough energy to power their trap.
Cornwell encourages Culber to make peace with Stamets and start his life afresh. Burnham is left out in the planet's Unbreathable atmosphere until the Red Angel appears.
Leland's Section 31 ship can close the wormhole behind the Red Angel to stop the future version of Control from following her through, though Leland is attacked by the present-day version of Control which is still active within his ship. Tyler manages to close the wormhole behind the Red Angel.
The Red Angel is caught in the trap and revives the momentarily dead Burnham, who recognizes the figure as her mother Gabrielle (Sonja Sohn).
