Gallows Humour: Inside 'The Horror of Frankenstein' (2018)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

This eighteen-minute featurette takes a look at the production of Hammer's THE HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN from 1970. Historians Jonathan Rigby, Kevin Lyons and John J. Johnston are among the people who are interviewed as they discuss the film, its comic tones as well as how it came to be. There are a lot of very good stories told here including the pre-production stuff on how Jimmy Sangster was brought on board to write the picture and how this turned into him directing it. There's some nice stuff told about how Hammer was trying to turn Ralph Bates into their new star and the legacy of the picture is discussed as well. If you're a fan of Hammer or of the film in question then you'll certainly want to check this documentary out. The eighteen-minutes actually contain a lot of good information about the film and fans should enjoy everything discussed.
