Don't expect an extension of the film here. Instead, expect a show that's in a league of its own.
It was brilliant decision not to allow this show to mimic the film, and it was pure genius not to allow the film's iconic characters, played by Gena Davis and Tom Hanks, to become boldly visible within any scene. If it either had, this show would not have had the chance for its famous storyline to grow beyond the film. If it had, this storyline would never had the opportunity to widen and increase its depth with love, hate, bigotry, fear, friendship, and passion that was presented in every episode we are blessed to watch.

A fun, poignant and much needed series
sophia5512 August 2022
If you're here to figure out if you should watch this show or not, filter out any review with the words "woke" or "historically inaccurate" and go from there. Reading these reviews, we must have watched different shows- the costumes are gorgeous, there's tons of baseball scenes, and the characters are nuanced and authentic. It's almost like people are more critical of stories featuring women, especially Black and gay women... Overall I would highly recommend this show- it has the spirit of the movie, with in my opinion better developed characters and unparalleled performances!

Great series!
leighlew314 August 2022
Enjoyable series! Great representation across the board. Lots of humor and heart. If you enjoy shows like Mrs. Maisel or Hacks or anything based around women, especially LGBTQ women (of all backgrounds), you'll enjoy this one. Highly recommended.

God yall are annoying

Watch 5 minutes of a show and tank its reviews because it doesn't meet your personal wants.

This show is great, not without some faults as anything would be, but try actually watching rather than listening to these reviews. Yes it focuses on the women and issues they faced rather than the baseball. If you ask me that makes for a much, much more entertaining and interesting series.

It's funny, it's well written, it's got great casting! It's got heart too, I don't know what more you could want! Excellent show! I''my always up for an all women cast, but they really did well casting the right women, in this one.

Best show I've watched in years
scullyno1013 August 2022
I've binged it twice since it was released and couldn't find a single thing I didn't like even on the second time around. It's funny, heart-warming, brilliantly produced, well written, well scored and well acted. Has the right amount of angst to pay off and there was no 'misery for misery's sake', which ruins so many other shows made today. This seems to have been written with the audience in mind, rather than to be groundbreaking or arty, and I mean that in the best possible way.

I wish I could erase it from my brain and watch it again for the first time. Loved it.

Reminder this is NOT a documentary & all the events do not need to be 100% true
MatthewCherrier13 August 2022
Yes this is "based on a true story" but that doesn't mean it has to 100% historically accurate! The Conjuring is also "based on a true story" and I'm pretty sure they took some liberties & added a lot to the original story to make it more interesting. Why should this be subjected to different rules?

I find it hilarious that so many were so surprised & complained that a tv show that's about women baseball players that is set in 1943 has a lot of gay characters & racism ....

If you're not a bigot & want to watch a good show give this a shot.

Im very sick of all the ignorance woven into so so so many reviews of movies & tv shows on this app.

orcinussr12 August 2022
I actually enjoy watching Abbi Jacobson and saw the film and figured this would be a fun and entertaining show - and it is! Much more so than I had expected so, what a pleasant surprise - forgive me that this isn't more of a critical review as I am only on episode 1.

Fantastic!
cateainsworth14 August 2022
I don't understand the bad reviews!!! I think the show is well written and has a lot of heart. I like that there are multiple storylines and they incorporate a lot of important topics. I would like to note that these storylines aren't about being "woke"- as some reviews have stated. All of the topics and issues included have always been around! So, sit back and enjoy the show!!

It's really about sexual and gender identity
pd-194906 January 2023
Don't go into this expecting the same lighthearted comedy as the original film. There's some comedy here and there but this is overwhelmingly about women who are trying to find their sexual identity and, in some cases, gender identity. If you're ok with that then it's a decent enough show to pass the time, I guess. If you're offended by that then you'll hate the show. I don't hate the show, it's decent enough, I just wish that at least some of today's entertainment could be more about escapism than commentary on social ills or the current culture wars. I understand that art is expression of ideas but it's to the point now that almost everything they come out with has some sort of political talking point.

Using a title to get attention...then doing something different
csj1234 April 2023
For anyone wanting more of the great A League of Their Own film will find the only thing this has in common is that title. It is the formula of modern Hollywood. Take a hit from the past, toss everything good about it in the trash, then insert agenda. Forget story, forget historical accuracy, forget...baseball. This show isn't about a women's baseball team. This show is about pushing an agenda.

The audience doesn't want this show...they want A League of Their Own. If the producers had simply set this show in 2022 and made it a modern basketball or soccer team, named it something else, it would have worked. By ripping off ALOTO...you disappointed the fans of the original, and they won't come back.

But them again...nothing is going to fix terrible acting, writing, and directing. This show is a complete mess. Do not believe those 10 ratings, this show is at best a 4...and that is if you know nothing about the original movie.

Abbi Jacobson is a genius
davidsonerin-6607917 August 2022
And this show is the best show I've seen all year. Immediately addicted. Cup filled up and overflowing with gratitude for the queer stories told in this show. Deserves all the praise. Thank you for making a life changing masterpiece.

Plot touches subjects.the 92 movie couldn't
rairoldi-0170613 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First off some of these reviews sort of tell me you didn't actually watch the series. The 2 storylines show us the different paths and different struggles faced by the characters as they try to navigate 1940s America. Although there are a couple historical things that I didn't like (a character says " In God We Trust " in the first episode - that didn't get traction 'til the 50s). I still don't like rock music in a show that's from a different era. Janis and The Runaways fit the bill. It's entertainment not a history lesson. Don't just look at the poster and assume.

There's no crying in baseball, and apparently there's no baseball in baseball either..
miinty21 August 2022
I was really looking forward to this one. The first 2-3 episodes really made you think that they were setting up a great story.. and then, they didn't.

It honestly, it made no difference to me that they were gay - It was a little lazy that 99.4% of all the characters had the same secret - what was truly a waste was that EVERYTHING was glossed over for the relationship drama - Character development/traits were cut shot or tossed out the window, the baseball was wedged in between scenes (with no stakes!) as if they were like, Oh yea, this is supposed to be A League of Their Own.. and the potential conflict that they set up was lazily concluded or just thrown away 5 seconds later. I don't know if connecting scenes were cut or it was just lazy writing??

The dialogue and vibe were all very modern, I'm assuming it was a choice, but it kind of sucks you out of the time period - but in the beginning, I was rolling with it, thinking it was going somewhere, but when I realized that it wasn't, the whole thing became a bit insufferable.

There are good individual scenes, I laughed, I hoped, and the show had a good look, but it was pointless.

They also wasted Molly Ephraim.

This show had major potential and they threw it away for a typical relationship melodrama.

Even better than expected!!
n4love1614 August 2022
This show pays homage to the movie while fleshing out aspects of the time that the movie wasn't able to. You can tell that a lot of research, talent, & love went into making it. It's full of humor and heart throughout and such an enjoyable experience that I immediately started a rewatch after finishing it!

It's Ok
apmulhearn15 August 2022
I think it's ok. I wish the storyline gave more attention to some of the ancillary characters.

I do really like the emphasis on Max's story and struggle. I don't know why we spend so much time on the romantic relationship between the teammates. Doesn't bother me that it's included, so please let's not get that twisted - I just wish we spent more time on OTHER characters, too.

Darcy C'Arden is lovely.

Very Disappointing
ari_ela413 August 2022
Everything about this show just feels very inauthentic. I'm a lesbian. My two favourite things are period pieces and lesbians. So I was very excited about a female baseball series set in the 40s. It feels like they didn't want to put in the effort to reflect the time at all, and it gives a huge disservice to what it was like for lesbians in that time. I would really love for them to scrap this season and give it a proper go, because it could be great.

If you can completely ignore how everyone speaks like they're college girls from 2022, then maybe you could enjoy this show. I couldn't get past it. The entire show feels like a break of the fourth wall and in the worst way possible.

Not a period piece and not a baseball show
Jackbv12310 September 2022
I agree with reviewers who say that the people in this seem more like 21st century people than WWII era people. OK, I guess you can modernize the language some and still call it a period piece, but this is more than a little.

It's also the attitudes of the people. There are so many non-conformists especially the gay people. If you were gay in 1943, you kept your head down and were very careful. You sure didn't walk up to someone you just met and kiss her. Alan Turing who might be the father of modern computing and was probably one of the top 10 people as far as winning world war 2 was convicted and sentenced to chemical castration in the 1950's for being a homosexual. That was nearly a decade later and after his amazing contributions. It was deadly dangerous to be gay in the 1940's. And to try to do it while being a public figure made it even harder. No their attitudes toward it all were ridiculously inaccurate.

And did we need two such relationships? Did we need to deal with the oppression of blacks, the oppression of women, the oppression of black women, and the oppression of gays all in the same story? And then there is the underdog story of Carson as a behind the scenes baseball strategist while being subject to Dove and management. There is a lot going on besides baseball.

There were a lot of good moments. I didn't think it was as generally funny as the movie by the same name, but there were moments.

I think that Abbi Jacobson did mostly a good job of showing the personal impact of all the different things in Carson's life pulling her in different directions. I think that D'Arcy Carden played Greta as a little too easygoing about the whole gay thing and her early relationship issues with Carson. Chanté Adams was mostly believable in her role albeit perhaps a little too much in the wrong century.

Really good show hope it gets another season.
brookemckinney12 August 2022
I liked how they took things from the original movie. I am a really big fan of the movie ever since I watched it and now I love watching the show. I like the story lines and if a season two does happen I hope they go in more depth of them in the characters.

Sorry - no
SKNTN22 August 2022
My comments are based on the first 3 episodes. Despite some really fine performances, the writing lacks authenticity. The dialogue, situations, characterizations, and interactions are more 2022 than 1940s. It's just off. And, IMO: It's definitely not funny.

This show is a mess
jp-20630 August 2022
The baseballs aren't real. Yes, you read that correctly. The baseballs aren't real. They're CGI representations of a baseball and the physics aren't quite right. The ladies are faking it. Many elements of the 1940s are faking it.

The lexicon is from the 21st century and in no way represents the language used in the 1940s. There is no way any woman or and person would be swearing that much in public. Never, never ever. But Amazon Prime has a thing about dropping an f-bomb every 10 seconds.

I had no idea Janis Joplin had hit songs during World War II.

This is a 21st century revisionist look at the WWII era, riding the familiarity of the very popular movie of the early 1990s. This is nothing like it.

Just finished this series and honestly one of the best shows i've watched in a long long time. It's hard to make a show where you don't get bored, at least in some parts i find but this show had me entranced. Can't wait for next season!
