fwiw, this netflix documentary was better than wormwood in that there were zero re-enactments.

many times throughout this 4-part documentary, bias was shown in the form of choice of music, narration, and sequence. it did linger on some moments and ultra-compress others. what remains is a moving and largely factual account.

A great leader cut down before his time

Watching this series atm. Really brilliant. I knew he developed great relationships with many African & Latino Americans in very dark times. I had not really understood how much he was the direction against the Vietnam war. Great interviews with the late great John Lewis. Watching it now, you have a sense of how more statesmanlike all leaders were at that time. We currently live in an era with a President so opposite to those values. The anguish through the nation at his death especially for minority communities was significant & he helped to encourage new leadership.

Good, But Not The Best Netflix Documentary

Netflix cranks out some of the best docu-series and documentaries like Shot In The Dark, Wormwood, Wild Wild Country, Firechasers, and many more. And while this one didn't live up to those aforementioned docs, it was still passable and had some interesting information. The film starts things off provocatively, showing how loved he was by many, and then his shocking murder that was caught on camera, and they ask "how did this happen"? They then describe the early life and career of Bobby, from the fact he was raised rich and was taught they had an obligation to serve the needy, to his famous TV grilling of Mob Boss Jimmy Hoffa, as well as his various acts in politics like his brother's run for president, his problems with communism and race scares of the time, and his own presidential run as well. But how well did they do this, I will address this in the second paragraph.

The film interestingly portrays the division of the time with race and poverty, much like our times now, and how Bobby difficultly manages it, trying to please everyone. I feel like the drew things out longer then they had too, they would often make their point and then talk about it for a long time. Though they briefly mention his unconstitutional acts. they also left out certain reasons why people hated him, possibly to paint him in a more perfect light, but that my opinion. The pacing was also hit and miss, sometimes it would be perfect and other times it would either go way to fast or go way too slow. But it was still en enjoyable watch, lots of never before seen footage as well as emotional interviews with his closest colleagues. The narration however did a great job describing the state of politics starting with JFK's win and Bobby's work in politics and his eventual run for president. They described him well as a radical who demanded change in Civil Rights, Vietnam, and Labor parties. Lots of introspective description of Bobby as a human being.

All in all it wasn't the best documentary ever made, but if you have patience, you might enjoy it.

A extremely insightful view on who Bobby Kennedy was.

I knew little about Bobby Kennedy and this four part documentary series was extremely insightful on who Bobby was. This itself is something great as you can dive into the man and almost feel what goes inside is head. The footage is incredible beautiful and nostalgic. I highly recommend this limited series.

He would have made a good president

4/30/18. A nicely done documentary series about JFK's younger brother, the "runt" (as his father called him) who would be president. The 4 episodes cover the man behind the image. For those who were around in the '60s, Bobby was the amiable young idealist/activist who really cared about the social issues of the day. He was a much more passionate Kennedy than JFK. Sadly, he never had the chance to implement many of his ideas for social justice because he was assassinated 2 months after Martin Luther King was. Worth catching. Great archival footage that captured his boyish good looks and his humor to cover a nervous and charming personality. He would have made a good president.

An important piece of history that changed America and the world

I'm grateful that the documentary was done in that it recounts important, forgotten history that profoundly affected our lives to this day. The documentary failed in providing relatively little information about Bobby and wasting too much time on Jack and on tangents. I recommend reading more than one biography of Bobby for a fuller story of his life and times, including his presidential campaign and the alternative history that would have been, had he not been assassinated. The film says there was a conspiracy to kill Bobby and by law enforcement to cover up the involvement of other conspirators (which is true) but does no investigative journalism to prove the conspiracy. It essentially says people have evidence and are trying to get a new investigation. Nothing new. It also absurdly defends Sirhan, who was caught in the act, and tries to generate sympathy for that evil man. It's like an extended episode of Biography. I miss investigative journalists, an endangered species. I hope the film sparks more interest in Bobby for viewers than the filmmakers have.

RFK Almost All The Way

For three episodes I was completely enthralled by this four-part documentary on the life and times of Robert F Kennedy. Coincidentally, I'm currently reading the Larry Tye biography on Kennedy so this series couldn't have come to my notice at a better time.

Let me say straight away that I am a keen supporter of what Kennedy stood for and was striving to achieve before his assassination in June 1968 and do believe that both America and the world would have turned out better if he'd lived. He sure wasn't perfect - you.need only witness him baiting witnesses on the shoulder of Joe McCarthy during the early 1950's. However, I'm willing to grant that a person, especially through maturity and experience can change their views and from where I'm standing, Kennedy's seemed to change for the better as he became more involved with campaigns promoting civil rights, supporting the Latin and Native American causes, the war on poverty and of course the war in Vietnam.

It was fascinating to see so much verité footage of Kennedy's progress from being JFK's campaign manager in 1960, to being appointed Attorney General, then running for the Senate in Nrw York and finally his fateful bid to run for the presidency in 1968.

I was constantly struck by his graciousness and humility in meeting and helping people with problem, especially considering he came from such a privileged personal background. His story is told here in chronological order with extensive use of TV footage of the time, with interjections made by surviving family, friends and colleagues. I appreciate they may have been hand-picked but it's still remarkable how, forty years after he was slain, those around him revered him so highly

If this programme had ended with the third episode, I think I'd have rated it as high as I could but the fourth and final unnecessarily feeds into events after his death, including the trial of his convicted killer Sirhan Sirhan (and of course the conspiracy theories surrounding the murder), the chaotic Democratic Convention of 1968, the election and re-election of Nixon, bizarrely the Woodstock Music Festival of 1969, Teddy Kennedy's Chappaquiddick incident which saw an innocent young woman, Mary Jo Kopechne die, the Kent State shootings of 1970, ending up unsurprisingly with Watergate and Nixon's resignation.

Still, I came away from these four hours knowing a whole lot more about Bobby Kennedy and from where I'm sitting, most of it good. He came across as a listener and a doer, a rare thing in politics then, as now. Indees, my biggest takeaway from it was a perception of how much higher the standard of political candidacy at the highest level appeared to be then as opposed to now, especially in America.

Flawed At the End

This four part mini-series did an excellent job portraying the awful year of 1968 in our country's history. The historical footage of Bobby Kennedy's late entry and ultimately tragic run for the Democratic presidential was riveting, especially for those of us who lived through it. Just watching the footage you got a real feeling how Kennedy was connecting with a large portion of the electorate, especially minority groups. Certainly we had seen nothing like this before on the presidential level. Would it have been enough to win the nomination and the presidency? Of course, we'll never know. The first three one-hour episodes were excellent in showing all this. Unfortunately the fourth-and-final hour spoils much of what went before. Tendentious and polemical, it is filled with far-left personages applying 21st century themes and conjecture to a man who has been dead for over 50 years. A second gunman? Please... All bullets fired came from Sirhan's gun. Period. No conspiracy. Etc. And the last hour might have been called The Paul Schade Hour. A labor leader who was close to Bobby Kennedy, the last hour is filled with his opinions, gripes and views. Inconsequential and definitely not why you watch the series. So, in the end, flawed. But do watch the first three hours for some excellent footage about a key time in our nation's history, and a special man, Bobby Kennedy.

Thin hagiography

I'll keep this review short. The first 2 episodes were solid and informative. The second 2 dragged and ultimately this could have easily been condensed into 3 episodes. Great footage and Bobby seemed like a good man and a genuine and great leader, but the anecdotes and interviews from the cast were very bland and offered little insight.

Thin and Shallow

While there is a great deal of rare historical footage, this production doesn't provide any in-depth analysis of the man and his candidacy. The lack of narration is both jarring and telling. Any analytical narrative would have emphasized the fact that, while popular and symbolic, RFK's candidacy had little substance. He became a hero to the Latinos and (to a lesser extent) African-Americans, but he never articulated a real plan or proposed a practical policy that would have improved their plight. He conveniently transformed his image from a Hawk in 1962 to a Dove in 1968 once he saw the political capital in representing the peace movement. Yet, again, he had no plan to end the conflict in Vietnam. I firmly believe RFK was in support of civil rights and peace, but it takes more than a family name and compassion to be an effective leader. I doubt RFK would have gone down in history as an effective president had he lived to be elected.

The fourth and last episode of this series tips the hand of the producers. If it wasn't apparent in the first three episodes, the message of the fourth was clearly that the country could have been "fixed" if RFK had lived. That of course is pure speculation and, as I wrote earlier, is doubtful. The last episode is little more than blatant hero worship. The final episode also spends too much time on pointless conspiracy theories, theories which attempt to amplify RFK's real importance by suggesting that a higher level of authority considered him a threat and had him eliminated. Sadly, it was only the maniacal actions of mentally-disturbed man that tragically ended the candidacy of Robert Kennedy.
