I didn't have the chance to watch Poochandi in theatres, thankfully it's available on Astro First.
Firstly, I love the concept that was put forward in this film. Love how the director managed to fuse ancient practices, ancient civilization, religion and Malaysia seamlessly into this gripping story. This film is not messing around with that usual elements that you find in local films.
It feels very genuinely Malaysian without having any South Indian filmmaking flavor that we are all accustomed to, hence the result is very impressive. I can see the amount of research that went into crafting this story.
Overall it's a stunning Malaysian horror film. I won't say it's as good as South Indian films because I believe South Indian films are not a benchmark for filmmaking. We Malaysian have so much of stories to be told: that's unique to us and our ancestry. After Jagat, Poochandi is truly a benchmark for local made films.
Kudos to Wickneswaren Kaliaperumal for this impressive work. I should've watched it in theatres.
Easy 8/10 for me.
