Good.

4 out of 5 stars.

The episode is great. It has some violent disturbing moments. Every thing is starting to fold into place with the story. Butchers past is revealed with his motives.

Bring back the laser baby!
BA_Harrison28 August 2019
After the brilliance of last episode's laser baby scene and Billy Butcher's hilarious anti-god rant, the chance that this episode would seem a little disappointing was always going to be high. 'The Innocents' is still good TV, but it doesn't have any outrageously OTT scenes, instead developing the character of Starlight and her relationship with Hughie, and introducing mind-reading supe Mesmer (Haley Joel Osment), who is called in to try and find out more about The Female (Karen Fukuhara).

Mesmer's introduction at a meet-and-greet event is the funniest moment, for he is sharing the limelight with stars such as Billy Zane and Tara Reid (both regulars on the autograph circuit), but on the whole this is probably the weakest episode of the season so far.

Terrific Episode
joe1236113 May 2021
The best bit I really appreciated was the moment in the bar, when my initial thought was, "Homelander" has sent the "Amorphous man" (who is like the all blue lady in X-Men, that can turn herself into anyone), the omni-impersonator, in order to lure Hughie away from Starlight and into his clutches. "Homelander's" back-story becomes ever-more disturbing and unsettling with each new episode; luckily for Hughie, he is almost palpably relieved, when he realises it is actually Butcher, who is just messing with him. The only way it seems Butcher comes out of this alive, is (I'm guessing or can envisage) the Asian super-woman kidnapped by terrorists joins forces with Starlight to stave off "Homelander's" vengeance. All characters are likeable, but "Frenchie" and "Butcher" are my personal favourites - even Homelander elicits some sympathy and understanding in light of his obviously horrendous childhood - the "wicked witch" is clearly Stillwell. Think that whole thing's going to take a very sinister turn as well, before too long. The other standout moment for me thus far, which was a masterful performance from Mr Quaid, was his improvisational "gay blackmail" speech against the hypocrite "Ezekiel"; probably hard for him to do with a straight face; it was so out-of-character, but such a genius move to ad-lib under pressure as a desperate last play/ploy to seize the moment, and (very reluctantly) take the initiative. Finally, it seems all the seven "supes" are representing one of the cardinal sins - the Deep is obviously lust, which becomes apparent most readily; "Homelander's" is almost certainly hubris/pride - it's unclear whether we are pre- or post- fall (presently, as of Season 1 Episode 6) though. Not that Starlight fits into this paradigm; however "Translucent's" vice was likely to have been sloth; though again this is all supposition. Obviously "Homelander" offends on multiple counts though; two propensities already directly displayed or heavily referenced and alluded to are also anger/wrath and lust. Not sure about "Queen Maeve" - though I understand the name correlates with being red-headed/auburn - however I'd guess it might be envy. The other "supes" are more mysterious; it's not clear what their function or "powers" might be, but that certainly leaves at least greed and gluttony as-yet unaccounted for, though it's a only a slight inference, and certainly not explicit or in any way overt, just more of a (hypothetical) sub-text that bubbles subconsciously underneath the surface (maybe).

Overall, I'm blown away though; and rooting for "Team Boys", but understanding that the "supes" are very damaged people, possibly through no fault of their own, but just as much unwitting victims as anyone else, even if seemingly absurdly empowered ones, albeit in an illusory and less-than-human way. "Vought corporation" is the real villain; with which I feel Stillwell's story is likely to be heavily entwined - I'm not sure of the specific reference, but I think it's Shakespearean*, and it sums the whole Boys versus Supes franchise up nicely: "What fresh hell is this?"

*A quick goo-gel (great for all your hair-styling needs) reveals that it may actually have been Dorothy Parker that originated this idiom.

Good mix
Leofwine_draca8 April 2022
Another good mix of elements in this episode. Really enjoying the feminist angle which is sensitively handled and the Haley Joel Osment scenes are excellent. I'm loving the show at the moment.

Mesmer the Traitor
ZegMaarJus11 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode begins with The Seven, they are starring in a realitysoap. Billy and Hughie go to the church. The Deep apologized himself to Starlight. MM meets Mesmer. Mesmer meets his daughter: Cleo. Billy reveals to Hughie that Homelander ubducted Becca, Billy's wife. Kimiko broke Mesmer his wrist. Billy discovered that Kimiko is a terrorist. Mesmer gives information about The Boys to Homelander. Starlight kisses Hughie. Nice Episode of The Boys Season 1, again a really solid episode. I really liked the character development of Hughie here!

Fake News, Impunity, Collateral Damage
mcisneros-6480920 June 2021
We are back after the Anti-Christian fiasco and it seems we are getting a fresh start. Focusing on real moral and existential doubts, the show gets interesting once again.

S1.E6 - Really Fun Episode [9/10]
panagiotis199320 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E6) My Reaction / Review for The Boys Season 1 Episode 6 ''The Innocents'': Episode 5 was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Knowing that these ''heroes'' are made and not born this way sucks. It means that anyone could become a hero by taking compound V. Frenchie and MM are so funny together, love them. I hope that Deep will get exposed for the perv he is (he got exposed, yay). Mesmer seems like an interesting character with cool powers. I like Butcher's tragic backstory. We get to see baby Homelander for the first time, that's cool. Wow Mesmer gives information to Homelander? What a jerk! Overall another amazing episode, my rating is 9/10.

Heavy on the drama and somewhat pointless
shwetafabm20 August 2020
Seems like a huge risk was taken and it went as expected. I just find Starlight and Hughie's romance a tad boring. We get backstory. We get a moral issuenof supers vs normies.

More slow-paced than previous episodes.
LegendaryFang563 August 2021
A little less action-packed of an episode compared to the previous episodes, more slow-paced. That was basically foretold with there only being two content warnings at the beginning of the episode as opposed to more. It was, of course, still enjoyable. Homelander was the highlight.

I'm tired of Billy Butcher being "a boss"
noalygh16 August 2019
The Supes' relationships aren't equal. But The Boys' aren't either. The writing here is that the team doesn't work on mutual respect. It's based on Butcher telling everyone what to do. At the beginning, he recruited Frenchie by tricking him to get seen by Translucent and convinced MM by lying that there is no Frenchie. When they fight, he shuts them off like adults do to kids without trying to resolve the problem when he acts irrational and reckless himself. Billy gets mad people do things but he left the team on their own last episode at Believe Expo for his personal business, and when asked he just told MM to f- off. He had Hughie hack Annie's phone and use her to get to Ezekiel and now makes him break-up with her. No, those things don't make Billy badass and funny, writers. Billy is just crossing the line. That's a crummy thing to do with your main character and it makes him a tough swallow for the audience.

On the episode, it doesn't offer much besides The Female's backstory and more business satire so it's a season low for me.

Weakest episode so far, but enjoyable
thomasgouldsbrough13 August 2022
This is certianly weaker than the previous episodes, as it's a lot slower, and not as subtle or as intelligently written, but neverthe less it's still enjoyable to watch. The scene where Mesmer meets his daughter is heartbreaking to witness, which is probably the most redeeming aspect about the episode.

Losing its luster.
bsimpson18928 December 2019
The #metoo stuff the writers inserted is really ruining the series for me.

More BOGUS unlikely events going on, with the plot playing out mostly as suspected.
davidhiggins-897563 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
**Does contain spoilers** **Does contain spoilers** AND Future PLOT predictions.

What a joke of a storyline in ep 6. The script writers really think we are thick!. AS IF when Butcher goes to see the Deputy Director of the CIA, in her office with a vial of the compound V drug & other evidence and a list of demands, AS IF with a long list of demands including immunity for him & his team, the one demand about them prosecuting Homelander, she refuses him and he just walks out with goods, ALLOWED to. Even after a threat of him ending up in a black site had previously been given. It would NEVER have happened!.

He'd have been detained, evidence & drug TAKEN from him and he would have only been let out after he'd dropped wanting the Homelander demand. Which she knows he'd have done. Butcher was all keyed up into getting Homelander himself, him & his misfit grimy bunch were doing it on their own anyway, the almost sole purpose that he and some of the others had in their lives. They would have likely carried on anyway doing their thing if the evidence was given to the CIA or not.

So I call BOGUS on that scene, would never have happened.

AND just remembered, the mind reading guy. Joel AI guy. He would not be moping around at conventions selling books. His abilities would have been in HIGH demand by the CIA, FBI other law enforcement agencies, tech companies, banking, security companies. He would be a Multi-millionaire already, not begging Homelander on rooftops to get back in to the action, ratting Butchers bunch out. His future would be secure with opulent accommodation with plenty of money to bribe/influence folks to see his daughter more often, if that was such a big concern of his.

SO that storyline was utterly BOGUS.

**Future plot predictions** AS mentioned in my ep 4 review, I knew/suspected the Compound V would be responsible for their powers to start with, not just enhance them. The Supe's having been given it from birth. I also said I suspect Miss Flashlight would eventually find out either her mother had allowed her to be given the Compound V drug a birth &/or she finds out her mother is not even her mother. Then she flips out & flips over to helping Butchers gang. I bet that all comes up later on.

**More Future plot predictions** I suspect near the end of the last episode of season 1, we get to see an intact mobile phone washed up on a beach with perhaps a short clip of someone taking a video of Homelander & WW knock off leaving the doomed plane that crashed. Sticking it in some sort of secure container. The sort of scene that I'd put in the plot. There would also have been the black box voice recordings as well. Maybe instead they get found after Fish Face gets slapped down by the Superman knock off & he goes off to find it & release it on Social Media. OR if the corporate lactating woman gets heavy with Fish Face.

**Even More Future plot predictions**.

And later on, as Butcher has an uncanny ability into getting into locked buildings, maybe on the slim chance, he himself is a Supe, it's a possibility a big twist in the storyline, his gang finds out he has abilities to walk through walls. With gormless blank face Richard Hendricks guy with an even longer blank face.

It is an offbeat slim twist in the tale possibility that the script writers 'may' have come up with that idea, maybe coming out in season 2. Possibly they had the creativity to come up with that idea. Though maybe not.

Looks like quite a bit of money has been spent on this series, having that big religious festival & all that, not a low budget project overall. So as either ep 5 or 6 had the GORE turned down, with no gore warning at all in the prescreening warnings, the producers having got the 'shock the viewers' out of their system earlier on we'll give ep 5 & 6 a meddling 5 stars. Nothing particularly special about them that I can recall from last nights viewings.

The religious episode being a bit FLAT, but the storyline is proceeding along, mostly as I suspected, though they did add in that the Corporation behind it all is setting up supervillians around the place & in other countries for their Supe teams to tackle. I suppose to get the US Defence contracts. Spiced it all up a bit. Maybe comes from the book rather from their own minds.

So some of the script is well thought out, then in places it really does let everything down when clearly such a thing would never happen. The millions to one chance of Richard Hendricks meeting Miss Flashlight on a park bench. ONLY if he was stalking her.

Overall it is an intriguing enough series to ponder through. So 5 stars for both episodes. Maybe looking towards 5 stars for the entire season 1. Just saying, with some well placed tweaks it could have been a whole lot better. Making more parts more real & probable CONTRASTING against the more fantasy parts WITHOUT so much of the SHOCK & DISGUST tactics thrown in. Overall not without merit, could have been better though.
