Spectacular

Watching this amazing documentary on Netflix and that voice sounded so familiar. I knew it had to be Mark Strong before I searched. I came straight to his page just to confirm. I love learning about animals, the differences and similarities of them all. The will to live. You get to appreciate life a whole lot more. This is a beautiful piece.

Packs in lots of details about Romanian nature

A fantastic documentary film focusing on Romania - I had no idea it was so full of life and a huge diversity of creatures within! Everything is nicely punctuated with scenery of mountains, sunrises and sunsets, and sweeping drone shots that show you a Romania that you might not know. Truly lovely wildlife film. A great one to watch with the family on Amazon Prime!

Beautifully shot, but

Beautifully shot, but whoever wrote the narration could have chosen less flowery language. Purple prose with footage like that is an annoying overkill.

Brilliant cinematography

Whoever was responsible for the cinematography in this documentary, they are a genius. Haven't seen this kind of skill in decades. It's very relaxing to watch it as well apart from the educational value.

Realizing what a beautiful country Romania is
chris-tudor24 February 2020
I loved it so much, I din't know that Romania is such an amazing country. I visited it as a child and loved it but I never realized the immensity and importance of the flora, faun and its entire geography. Well done. I wish the creators to move on a be trustful in creating similar projects like this.

A portrait escaping to many expectations. impressive. great. fresh. moving. about savage nature and landscapes and fauna. in same measure, about a real precious tresor. about life. and a land giving to it more than resources and places of refuge. but sense. and that does this film a document more than a documentary. a proof about a part of Europe out of prejudices, cliches and easy definitions. a film who you must see. not only for knowledge. but to feel the respiration and the beauty and the force and the purety of an amazing place.

First of all Forests are the most valuable gift of nature to us and to destroy this gift for money is meanness, Forests are the most valuable thing in the world and they are priceless. And secondly this documentary is extraordinary, soundtracks, perfect landscapes and amazing voice of Mark Strong makes this documentary remarkable. You have to watch it.

Simply awesome!

Most of the area was once covered by forest. The woodlands in the Carpathians derive from the original primeval forests of the region, but are now threatened by illegal logging. Romania's mountains are covered in forests: at the highest levels, you'll find magnificent spruces, while lower down beech, hornbeam, and oak dominate the woodland. These forests are home to several threatened mammal species, especially the large carnivores, bear, wolf and lynx. Wildflower-rich meadows (mown grassland) and pastures (unimproved grassland, used for grazing) provide one of the greatest floral spectacles in Europe.

In many places, the meadows are still mown by scythe, and they remain a major source of hay. Apart from many species of grass, Romania's wildflowers include numerous vetches, knapweeds and daisies, and several orchids.

This huge array supports huge numbers of insects and other invertebrates, birds and mammals. Plants and animals form part of an extraordinary ecological system.

Romania has some of the greatest varieties of butterflies and moths in Europe: there are at least 4000 species. It's the butterflies in particular that matter: they can live in any natural habitat, and their presence is an important indicator of the environment's health.

Breathtaking beauty

Certainly one of the most amazing documentaries, if not the best I have ever seen. It should be written in stone and every book of law that every Romanian should see this masterpiece. Maybe then they would appreciate what they have.

A very well filmed documentary about Romania's natural habitat, great images. What I didn't liked was the narration, in Romanian at least sounded outdated or like it was translated from another language with Google translate.

Amazing photography

Loved nearly every minute of this documentary of wild Romania. Breathtaking scenery - especially the view of wild flowers in the meadow with the mountains in the distance. Just spectacular. Bit of a downer at the end and I was hoping we'd escape the downside but nope. Humans can be awful. But the humans who filmed this are incredible. Thank you for a wonderful hour and a half.

Just a beautiful propaganda piece
andrewburgereviews17 April 2019
As a Romanian, I should owe it to my country to appreciate Tom Barton-Humphreys' "Untamed Romania", a documentary which, to be honest, feels unnecessary. The thing about the environment is that most people are aware of what they must do, its just that a lot of times they are not doing it. I am guilty of that myself now and then as I don't look where I throw waste. I am too busy--not an excuse, just saying.

Deep down we are all self-conscious more or less, if only to present a civilized image to each other, and "Untamed Romania" aims to target these sensibilities. It does a great job in portraying Romania's natural beauty over the course of a year, going through all the four seasons. The transitions free-flow nicely, from the brutal wildlife in the Carpathian Mountains to the mysterious, ancient caves of which I learned they number in the thousands. There are many facts in the film but both them and the imagery of a supposedly unforgiving nature don't go too far. Beauty here lies in the clean aesthetics and the soundtrack which was quite beautiful, by the way.

Still, something was eating away at me. The narration sticks to an impersonal tone for almost the entirety of the film's run-time, yet you cannot help but feel a bit anxious into when is the moral going to start. The narration is so neutral and simplistic that it almost convinces you nothing else will happen... just before it does. By its end, it explodes into a true but cliche sermon about protecting what we saw in the last 90 minutes. This is a fundamental problem of this documentary. It nullifies everything it showed us as its only true purpose are the last few minutes. I would have loved if there would have been a transition or a new insight into its ideas, but in the end while this is truly beautiful and technically astute, its just a propaganda piece.

"Untamed Romania" has noble intentions. It is rich and decently-paced in the way in which it unfolds the natural beauty of this country, one of the few things we, Romanians, can take pride in. But not only it stops there, it hurts itself through how shallow its environmental moral stance is. If people haven't listened by now, they won't listen after watching it.

Amazing documentary! I was surprised that the writer stealthily blended poetic beauty into the lines. Too bad that documentaries from rural countries are forgotten..

Stunning! Warning: Spoilers
The documentary is very well presented. It begins with a bear walking out of hibernation at the end of long winter & from there on follows the changes in nature and animal & plant life as the seasons change. It has breathtaking shots of all of nature's beauty that Romania has to offer. Towards the end they introduce us to what the interference of the apex predator is doing and its just a few minutes but extremely heartbreaking. I stumbled upon it by chance & am very grateful for this splendid film.

Amazing scenery and cinematography
maccas-563677 August 2020
Some really spectacular cinematography and scenery is on showcase here. I didn't realise just how beautiful Romania is! The scenery and showcase of animal life on display is breathtaking and diverse.

Romania's beauty is probably the only thing you'll learn about Romania here. I didn't come away having greatly enhanced my knowledge of Romania itself. Despite that, I have a new found appreciation for the nature in this part of the world.

If I hear anyone tease us Aussies about our crazy creatures again! Seriously, the swimming snake scenes here both freaked me out and amazed me at the same time. The bears, an ancient city, the Carpathians, and the Danube were highlights for me!

Recommend if you're into nature documentaries or planning a trip to this part of Europe sometime!
