I love Kirin
ericstevenson8 September 2018
Applejack and Fluttershy are off to solve a friendship problem. I admit to having forgotten the first time they did this together. These characters have been combined so many times it's hard to keep up. They go to this place where no one can talk. They drank from a river that took away their speech. They thought that by not talking they would solve all their problems.

One of them named Kirin can talk and has found an antidote. She is what makes this episode. She's seriously one of the funniest characters I've seen in the show for a long time. I love the designs of these characters. It's as bright and colorful as ever. That's what the show is known for. ***1/2

Taking a silent vow
TheLittleSongbird15 November 2021
"Sounds of Silence" is the highest rated episode here of Season 8 by quite some way, seeing as the ratings for most of the other episodes are unsurprisingly (and in most cases deservedly) quite low. Only 9 out of the 26 episodes of Season 8 are rated 8 and above here, but there are a few lower rated episodes in the season that to me were actually better than a couple of the high-rated ones. Am someone that loves the show but Season 8 was very uneven, very nearly as much as 6.

In my mind, "Sounds of Silence" deserves its distinction of the highest rated episode of Season 8 and is widely considered in the fandom as the best episode of the season. Personally don't think it is quite up there with the very best episodes of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' as implied by the rating, but when it comes to ranking the episodes of Season, this along with "What Lies Beneath" and "The Hearth's Warming Club" (to a lesser extent "Horse Play") are in a different league to the rest of the season. The best things about "Sounds of Silence" make for Season 8 at its best.

To me, "Sounds of Silence" was at its weakest with the moralising. A case of two morals in one and one is much better than the other, one is very identifiable and relevant to today's society though could have gone into more depth. But the other, the more dominant one, could have done with more subtlety and isn't as universal a moral (it is also one that can go either way)

However, "Sounds of Silence" has so many brilliantly done things. Absolutely loved the characterisation. The kirin make strong and quite promising first impressions, despite being silent their inventive character designs and their mysterious air make them memorable and their body language and reactions speak volumes. Applejack and Fluttershy are the Mane 6 characters focused upon, was very worried that it would be yet another Season 8 with an odd coupling at constant odds with each other and with their flaws over-emphasised. Not the case. Applejack has been known to be too stubborn and aggressive when focused upon, but "Sounds of Silence" does not go overboard on this in my view, she's flawed but endears. Likewise with Fluttershy, she thankfully is not bland with her trademark shyness being here but also some assertiveness. The two work really well together and their different personalities make for a partnership that is likeable, well contrasted and makes sense.

What really stands out for me in "Sounds of Silence" is Autumn Blaze. She gets my vote as the best individual character of the season, the most interesting, the most entertaining and one that is easy to root for rather than being out of character or a missed opportunity. She manages to be absolutely hilarious, her running gag and lines not wearing thin, but also surprisingly mature and not one-dimensional (plus the animators and writers were clearly having a ball with her, and Rachel Bloom voicing her). Her interaction with Applejack and Fluttershy is fun and charming. The voice acting all round is excellent, with the standout being the absolute joy and breath of fresh air that is Bloom.

Animation is colourful and beautifully and inventively detailed, particularly shining with Autumn Blaze's character animation and deliciously wacky expressions. It also does a great job immersing one into the Kirin world. The music is characterful and infectious, fitting beautifully. The song "A Kirin Tale" is also the best that 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' has had in a long time (the latter seasons were generally quite light in this department and were variable in quality). The writing is hilarious and thoughtful, the first portion is heavy in exposition but it was exposition that didn't feel too heavy in the talk, it didn't bog the episode down hence making it drag and it actually moved the story along. The story compels and is fun and emotionally investable, aided by the character interaction.

Concluding, not 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' at its best but it's Season 8 at its best. 9/10.

Rachel Bloom is back from Springfield Splendor! She's doing well.
adampkalb13 October 2018
To celebrate MLP's 8-year anniversary, I watched this episode to meet the Kirin that Rachel Bloom voiced. Her name is Autumn Blaze and she is the only Kirin who can talk. Applejack and Fluttershy's elements of harmony, honesty and kindness, both played a part in solving the problem. They are also going on a friendship quest together again after Viva Las Pegasus. This episode had a great lesson on handling your emotions. You shouldn't let a simple argument of words ruin any friendship you have with someone, and silence is not a good way to solve the problem. Do you ever think the Kirins look like ponies with branches on their heads? Their mane and tail also remind me of lions. Maybe they are part pony, part lion.

I hope I'm not the only one who noticed that Rachel Bloom's voice as Autumn Blaze sounded too much like Applejack (Ashleigh Ball). I made that mistake before with Lena Hall's Coloratura sounding like Sassy Saddles (Kelly Sheridan) and Emily Blunt's Tempest voice sounding like Princess Luna (Tabitha St. Germain). I actually met Lena Hall and Tabitha St. Germain at the 2018 Brony Con. Speaking of celebrity guests whose characters' voices may blend in with regular voices, I wish Michelle Rodriguez would voice a pony who befriends Rainbow Dash, because I have always wanted her to meet Ashleigh Ball since they both like playing tough girls and tomboys.

Diamon in the rough
fakesterrakester22 October 2019
The rough being the rest of season 9. Shame this writer only ever wrote this episode for the series, because if he was in place instead of jokes like Haber or Vogel the series post season 5 might be worth something.

The Last GOOD MLP episode

You might as well stop watching the series right here because everything after this point is nothing but frustration and heartbreak (not in a good way). Just stop here.

It's overrated.

The episode isn't bad up until the end. The last minute or so is so bad it really brings the episode down.

This episode makes Me flame on!
trollbogyo27 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The kirin are basically just a pony re-skin with the old hat gimmick of:-"fiery temper", the lesson is problematic/illogical, and most importantly flutters vase out of characteristically spineless in this episode. And the worst part is, this could've been amazing with just a few tweaks my personal suggestion:-"swap fluttershy with Bigmac"! Not only it'd be an interesting premise of the quiet and reserved helping the people of silent rage rediscover their voices but if the episode end with him and autumn blaze becoming a couple it'd be fare more interesting than boring old sugarbell who had literally no reason to be there!

Mediocre at best, boring, stupid, infuriating, cliché at worst.
trollbogyo22 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The episode's basic plot sounds more like clockwork orange, likewise the solution the kirin devise for their dilemma, the new named character is(Yet) another pinkie pie clone, fluttershy(who talked down a dragon)'s reasoning for continued silence is asinine and completely out of character, it's like the new writer wasn't told anything about he players of this episode or watched older ones. I don't recommend this to anyone!
