A precious gem deserving a lot of praise and a bit of polish...
rjatoc2 October 2018
What a perfect premise and beautiful setting for a film! And, yes, all the actors in Blanche are first timers; the movie was apparently shot on a tight timeline; and the budget was razor thin... given all these caveats, Blanche's creators and cast have something they all can, and should, be quite proud of at the end of the day. Now, in respect to all those involved (and the independently curious), I come here to provide a review from the perspective of someone removed from the intrepid West Texas community which inspired, conceived of, and forged this unique, fun tale.

I won't harp too much on the acting other than to say the producer perhaps should've brought in a coaching consultant capable of showing the film's players how to more aptly let go of their in-front-of-camera affects to better embrace their natural spirits. Raw and real West Texans are already "characters" (like anyone else, I suppose), and nearly all of Blanche's actors would shine in a documentary setting where they simply were being themselves. Instead, much of the cast dons a rigidity that probably could've been coached away in relatively short order.

I will say that Clifford Hardwick is able to cut through at times to pull off that natural-feel acting that many of the others can lack. Of the key players, he's often the most effective and deserves recognition here. A few of the ancillary characters can do the same, but their screen time is comparatively brief.

Okay, now to the most problematic-yet most fixable-aspect of Blanche: the editing. I more than once felt a creeping headache start to build during the film's dialogue sequences as the camera cut from face to face while each character delivered lines back and forth during conversation. Let the camera linger more, either on a single actor, even if not speaking, or at a wider angle to include both characters as they exchange lines. These quick cuts likely wouldn't be as sickening when viewed on smaller screens, but in a large-format theater setting, this flaw is magnified to distracting and sometimes painful proportions.

Another place to edit would be the scenes coupled to full-length songs. Just because there's an original score to showcase, that does not mean the film should become a de facto music video at various points merely for purposes of accommodating an entire song from start to finish. Maybe these moments would be less noticeable if this music video quality were less informed by 90's country music aesthetics in which fade split screens, wash-out transitions, and conspicuously forced lament dominate.

In a similar vein, the chicken training montage suffers a comparable fate, where inexplicable repetitions of the same exact shots are interspersed with each other to again perhaps accommodate another full-length song. Not sure how many times we saw that shot of Tommy holding Blanche the chicken up in the air, along with that other where he's stretching her wings, but once to a couple of times would've been more than enough.

Luckily, most of my admittedly nitpicking gripes could be remedied with ease by spending some more time in front of computer editing software. I'd love to see them re-cut Blanche in light of these minor issues and then I would happily plop down for another viewing. This film is worth an extra bit of TLC!

Still, I wholeheartedly commend Blanche for all it accomplishes. As the creator has indicated, everyone said it could not be done, that they were crazy for even attempting a feature film, etc. Well, they certainly proved those naysayers wrong, and in the process, showcased a beautiful section of the country. The stunning aerial shots alone make for a visually captivating aesthetic throughout. West Texas is gorgeous; its people wonderfully warm, and Blanche is a testament to these facts most of all. Well done, folks... again, be proud of your hard work!

Finally, in homage to one of my favorite scenes in Blanche (no spoilers), I have to say, "Move over Marfa!" With the premiere of this film, a more genuine and locally wrought brand of art has arrived in West Texas. So, to that end, I really hope Blanche is just the beginning of an Alpine-grown film tradition that's led more by those who actually have the region's DNA intertwined with their own, rather than the one commanded by a bunch of outsiders in black skinny jeans who've become synonymous with much of the area's creative scene. The time has come... the world is ready... and Blanche is the proof!

but somehow i kept on watching
zsachill10 October 2019
Let me start this off by saying, i am frrom Amsterdam(not native 35yrs) who knows almost to nothing about Texas culture and have a very very high standards when it comes to movies. but somehow it kept me watching.

Perhaps it was the simplicity of this movie, the true meaning of friendship they tried to show or just the warmth the people they played them selves. The Dialogues and filming is very simple but still relatable when ppl grow old. two songs they use in this movie are both very nice and already made me download it:) i'd say give it a go and enjoy the effort they put in this movie.

West Texas as Remembered
dmetoo26 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Starting off with an explanation: I am originally from W Texas, went to school with some of the actors, so I maybe a bit too harsh or too easy on the movie.

A good, warm embrace of the "ggod times" or "remembered good times" - a look to the nostalgic past when people are older and not as competative as they may have been earlier; friendship's importance remembered. All of the right ingreients for living - and for the making of a good film.

Forget that some lines sound as if they are read directive from a book. This is not Hollywood - this is West Texas. Hats off to the movie, the effort and the results.

Hearts in the right place, but very poorly made film, sorry
docweaselband25 October 2019
It may be "treat to watch a movie that causes one to reflect on what one holds dear about their piece of Texas" but these aren't actors (check out their other non-existent credits) and it shows.

Everyone watches actors and thinks "I could deliver lines, especially (like these ppl) if I'm playing myself or a character just like me"

Well, these ppl prove that notion wrong. The acting is horrid, and you can see the tricks the director had to use to deal with (probably) botched and poorly delivered take after take: early in the movie check out a convo between the old man and lady. They constantly cut to "over the shoulder" for every single line of dialog, so they could film it line by line with inserts, and its not only distracting and too many cuts for the scene (whiich would have benefitted from a long, uncut scene with both of them in the frame so you could see the reactions, but they stil deliver terrible readings, and you have to assume that's the best they could do. Every scene is like this; face of the person talking over the shoulder of the person they are talking to, cut to the other person back and forth. It even cuts back and forth mid sentence sometimes. These ppl couldnt deliver a line as well as the little kids in the first Charlie Brown christmas special.

The dialog is hokey , overly verbose (these old guys would be better served to be more taciturn, they deliver long bouts of exposition in corny, fake dialog delivered with less acting talent than a high school play.

The woman who owns the chickens must have been a relative of a backer, she stands out among terribly amateur actors as a most egregious case.

I could go on, about the travelling scenes where we are treated to the front of the truck instead of the Texas landscape (whiich it must be said by anyone who has travelled 95 cross country, is ugly, boring and monotonous) They managed to find the ugliest mudpond lake to have a long scene with even more exposition and pointless story tellling and unfunny anecdotes. I guess that part is pretty realistic, old cowboys and their former paramours probably do get together and go on and on with pointless, stupid stories then trail off into demetia.

You have to REALLY love cowboy hats, old cowboys and their old gfs and boring, pointless stories, including the plot.

"Is Blanche your chicken? Martha told me she gave you a chicken!" "Blance is a good looking chicken!" (big laughs) "Clifford, you better not be throwing chickens out of an airplane!" "Its noot like we're throwing babies out of a plane!" "YOu guys are impossible! Let's go to Martha's"

and it goes on like this.

Can't help but love the people
cindysym10 September 2023
Yes the people made the movie. They are definitely not actors, but you end up loving them anyway. The editing was horrible or I would've rated it higher. Why the editor showed several (many) of the same shots twice, let entire songs play when they should've been background music, or inserted a couple scenes where they didn't make much sense..almost ruined it for me. But the PEOPLE and the warm-hearted story make this film a real gem. These are indeed real west Texans in their divine environment doing the kinds of things they would do even if a camera wasn't on them. A dying breed., a lovely story.

Fun to watch!
khpalomino27 May 2020
This movie is so enjoyable to watch if 1)You're a Texan, 2) you're over 60, 3) you're an Aggie, 4)you live in the country, or any combination of the above. Not the greatest actors I've ever seen, but they took us along on a fun ride!

First time every movie played by first time actors - hits the stars
repjr31 July 2018
Businessman and author of 3 published books Sam Pfiester wrote the Blanche script inspired by a 50 years ago bet made in a small West Texas town. Playing a character in the movie it was impossible to know if it would hit a stump - or hit the stars.

Well... with a lot of Director/ Editor / songwriter & singer Twila Zlabar's MAGIC - the crowd first seeing it definitely thought it went beyond the stars. Thank you Twila. Thank you. It had been a fun time and an honor playing a small part -some say the villain- in Blanche.

Priceless! A real, hilarious story.
twoolever15 July 2020
You don't have to know Texas to love this story, but if you are a Texan, you'll recognize some of the most endearing things about West Texas. I haven't laughed so much at a movie since I can't remember when. And it's a great story of how friends are there for each other. And you'll learn stuff you never knew about chickens.

Almost turned it off
gummer83 July 2020
But I'm so glad I gave this movie a chance. Sweet story and I'm not surprised that there were no trained actors but regular Texas folks. Loved the fact that it took place near where my Grandmother was born (Fort Davis) when her father was an officer with the 10th. Fantasizing about them living and roaming that area.

A Fine Little Film
rogbeck920 October 2018
Blanche is a wholesome, light hearted film suitable for all ages. The storyline was simple but sweet. There are a few moments in the film that could have been more polished but overall the film turned out surprisingly well since it was shot in two weeks on a micro budget. I was impressed that the entire cast was comprised of non-professional actors. I've seen much worse films with multi-million dollar budgets featuring super star actors. Clifford's performance was outstanding and I imagine he could be cast in other films if he desired to pursue acting. It was very refreshing to see a film featuring older characters. The cinematography was beautiful and the music was moving and authentic. I enjoyed the kitschy west Texas humor, too. Kudos to everyone involved in the making of Blanche. They should be very proud of their efforts for producing an entertaining, fine little film.

Blanche (the movie) IS West Texas!
VivaGonzo22 March 2019
What a treat to watch a movie that causes one to reflect on what one holds dear about their piece of Texas - the PEOPLE. Hats off to the homegrown actors. All added genuineness - in spirit, speech and mannerisms. West Texas is a hard place to be from. With the boom and bust cycle of the oilfield, intense heat in the summers, drought, sandstorms, unceasing wind, and many other things newcomers don't care for - one has to be scrappy to stay. But if you do, you're sure to meet true characters (natives) like the ones in Blanche. You'll be the better for the introduction and enjoy some good old-fashioned fun along the way! Thanks to Sam Pfiester for bringing the essence of West Texas to the screen in such splendid simplicity - GREAT job! 👍🏻

What an uplifting movie
golfmike-8332820 October 2018
I truly loved this movie from start to finish. From the genuine Texan actors to the inspiring and engaging music that was perfect for the movie.

Clifford was so perfect with his antics and Tommy is a true cowboy. They portrayed how important friendships really are. And when friends get together "The miles don't even matter". Great song.

The whole theater just came alive from start to finish. People truly enjoyed the experience.

Watch this with your friends. It will make your friendship grow.

This Texas Gal LOVED this Texas Movie
annette-103885 July 2021
I loved everything about this heartwarming movie!

The scenery and locations around Alpine and Marfa made me miss what I love most about West Texas. The actors and their interactions with each other believably portrayed genuine friendships that last for decades. I felt like I was watching people I knew interacting with each other rather than Hollywood actors playing parts.

And for the music in the movie - it is nothing short of wonderful. Kudos to Twila LaBar.

(Sidenote: I did get a laugh over the conversation about Donald Judd. And another laugh over the UT tie.)

Will be watching this movie again!
