The original (English language) voice cast and writing team are composed of autistic individuals. In addition, other language dubs also use autistic actors.
Autistic artist-author Donna Williams was a major influence on the project, contributing ideas for episodes, as well as bringing several people to the attention of the production team, such Stuart Vallantine and Paul Issacs. She passed away before seeing the finished programme.
The experience inspired head writer/producer Andrew Brenner to develop a documentary about Williams' life.

Several of the cast, such as Sumita Majumdar and Michael White, had not written TV before, and were mentored by head writer Andrew Brenner.
All three of Pablo's actors (the Burns twins for the live-action portions, and Williamson for the voice) are autistic.
The programme's success lead to spin-off books, written by Brenner and Majumdar. They won the Gold Award at the Made for Mums Awards 2021.
