What's worse...
FilmFlaneur17 August 2018
An allegedly manipulative film produced for the purposes of propaganda.. or umpteen false reviews on this site condemning it out of hand with no indication of having seen it?
Says the director: " Making this film was a challenging exercise in objectivity. Being in Donetsk felt as if I had stepped through the looking glass. On that side of the mirror the beliefs were very different from the beliefs in the U.S. It was important to stay unbiased and politically neutral and tell the story subjectively through Deki's point of view. With the help of the editor, Dmitry Khavin, I think we were able to achieve that..."
The response to this film is so vitriolic that it has made me want to watch it and make my own mind up! I suggest any sensible person will want to do the same.

In fact this the evidnce of confession - Russia occupied part of Ukraine and uses mercenaries along with own troops to minimise losses.
This movie muts be removed form IMDB as a terrorists propaganda but has to be kept as an evidence for international court.
Remarkable.....

Unsurprisingly this film has attracted a lot of negative attention. The incessant social engineering on the part of the Western media has created a "Russian" boogeyman that the often ignorant and gullible are, predictably, all too ready to believe in.
The reality of the conflict in Ukraine is more complex. Like Yugoslavia the country has been divided along ethic lines, since a coup d'etat was launched with backing from the West.
What this fim shows in detail, is the horrors of war from the very personal perspective of a sniper. A man driven by a sense of moral obligation who sees the same things happening in the Eastern Ukraine, that happened in his homeland of Serbia.
Its a sobering watch that looks not only at his military actions but also at the very human cost of war for him personally and ordinary people trying to live ordinary lives under extraordinary circumstances. Constantly at risk of injury and death, as the two sides clash along the front lines, which are for the most part, residential neighbourhoods.
This is a compelling watch that's emotional, deeply sad, occasionally uplifting but always a sobering reminder of the awful cost of war.
10/10.

"A Sniper's War" is a key to understanding the tortured state of Ukrainian society
akcenat22 August 2018
Actually I thought this is a war movie, but a "Sniper's War" is the fascinating, disturbing, and intimate documentary that portraits a Serbian sniper who's moved to the rebel's Russian-basked republic of Donetsk to fight off the Ukrainian Army.
No matter what you think about the characters or the Ukraine conflict itself, as documentary it is powerful piece from a perspective we don't often see. Good documentaries, like this one, expose characters and conflicts that are unfamiliar to most audience members. It, also, benefits from very good cinematography by Alex Gritsenko and Santiago Garcia, who were BTW arrested five times wondering on their own around during making of this movie. Billy Martin's mournful music adds to the impact of these scenes, too.
Surprisingly interesting. 8/10

Nobody criticizes Top Gun for it's pro US propaganda, so let's leave the politics out of this. A Snipers War is an interesting story irrespective of what side of the Atlantic you happen to be on. Watch it with an open mind from a humanist perspective and you'll be surprised.

The real 1/10s Propaganda Team are out in force
lyx-123 August 2018
Isn't it weird? All the 1/10s seem to me more like a propaganda effort to tank this documentary!
Undeserved the low rating. I don't think politics should affect one's ratings of a a film or documentary.
This comes across as authentic and a good view into what real war entails. There isn't a lot of action at all, but a lot of close studies of people and their lives.
I didn't feel differently about the wars or Russia. In fact, there's nothing about Russia in there, just ethnic Russians minorities fighting attacking majority Ukrainians in a separatist war. The protagonist is a Serbian sniper. The other men and women were separatists.
It comes across as real, compelling and suspenseful with Deki and his nemesis. Dum-dum bullets...wow! Deki is a very well-crafted character.
The cinematography is outstanding as well.
Gave 10/10 to balance all the strange 1/10s.

Great doc that shows the truth of what really happened in Ukraine dont believe the Russia-phobia
bryanmendez10018 August 2018
This film does a great job on showing what really happened in Ukraine. If you dont believe this happened just go on YT and search American journalist with Ukrainian/ Russia rebels in Eastern Ukraine. They document what its like for the volunteer soldiers.
Everyone giving 1 star yelling "PrOpAgAnDAaa!" PUH-lease😑
mattlindy-5486930 January 2020
All these 1 star reviews yelling "propaganda!".
First off, think about how much PRO-UKRAINE media you have seen or heard, and if not search for some as it's REALLY easy to find.
Yet all you guys are SO upset that a movie showing the OTHER SIDE of what we, as Americans especially, never see. The movie is a documentary that gives facts, it tells about the war, and the viewer should already know basically everything about PRO-UKRAINE arguments/beliefs/opinions.
So my question is, what's propaganda about showing the other side? It had it's moments that felt a little *intentionally* one sided, but 95% of it is just pro-Russian volunteers sharing their experiences and current life. HOW IS THAT PROPAGANDA? Even if it truly was propaganda, you should be smart enough to know that it is, so it shouldn't be able to do what propaganda is supposed to do, which is to change your opinion via extremely biased one sided media which this is NOT.
Again, let's just pretend this movie is 100% propaganda, not only is it the ONLY movie I know of that shows this side of the war, but compare that to the hundreds thousands of hours of media from MSM news, documentaries, movies, art work, newspapers etc that is PRO-UKRAINE. The difference in amount of content from one to the other is astronomical. So don't act like a doc on this subject, from this side, is a normal thing & once again, especially in America.
Just because you think it's propaganda does it mean it's bad quality deserving of one star? Absolutely not. These are REAL PEOPLE, WITH REAL FEELINGS, they aren't psychos they are just simply products of their environment with the main character at the beginning telling us his main reason why he volunteered which was the ATTACK carried out by NATO on the center of Belgrade, their Capitol, resulting in the DEATHS of THOUSANDS of CIVILIANS!
No matter which side you support, anyone with compassion and ability to try and see from another person's perspective would understand this snipers motivations, which was civilian deaths and fighting for what he believes in. That's respectable even if you don't agree with the side he is on.
This movie is NOT 1 STAR. Now if it was more like some North Korean type propaganda movie where they only show the good parts, lying about current conditions, giving you only one point of view through it's entirety. This isn't that, this shows all of the nitty gritty truths, just from one angle that probably 99% of you have never seen.
So stop, and enjoy a pretty dang good documentary from a point of view basically never seen before, at least not in my life.
We should always try to get both sides of a story right? For at the VERY LEAST, it will just strengthen your beliefs on which side is "right" in your opinion.
Watch the movie, have compassion for people who don't whine about 1st world problems on IMDB, HUMANS who are at WAR, watching their friends and family die where they live. Agree or not, it's called sympathy and understanding which are quite obviously traits that almost no one has anymore.
Watch it, it's the furthest thing from a 1 star documentary. FACTS.
PS. I'm Pro-Ukraine, even though that opinion is based on the very controlled and filtered propaganda we get thrown at us daily in the United States.
Pss. LOVE ONE ANOTHER, SHOW COMPASSION, AGREE TO DISAGREE, KEEP AN OPEN MIND, WORK TOGETHER AND HELP EACHOTHER DON'T RELY ON GOVERNMENT! If the majority of people in the world did all that, this movie probably wouldn't have even be able to be made.

Completely misleading information

The promo for the movie was rigged. That's for sure. How dare anyone say 'civil war' when entire sane world knows it's a proxy war of Russia against Ukraine. The movie is a pure propaganda. Nothing else. It's not even a decent documentary.
