Wild Ride
18 March 2019 | by Valentijn78See all my reviews

I'm writing this review after watching the 4th episode. This is a sci-fi series set in the near future. Monsters run amok at night, though little or nothing is shown of them. Repressive and violent military rule has taken over the city, under the guise of protecting the citizens from these monsters, and there is an extremely strict curfew from dusk to dawn.

A variety of people want to get out of the city, and engage in a race to an unknown destination, where it is promised that the winning team will be taken to an island with no monsters or curfews. The diverse main characters have their back stories and motivations for escaping the city revealed throughout the course of the race.

The first episode was confusing, due to having a lot of content, back story, and flashbacks jammed into it. It requires watching every moment and listening to every word, and I had to watch it twice before I really understand what was going on. The second episode was again a little confusing, due to basically happening in the same "present" time period as the first episode, but with flashbacks and back stories of different characters. Despite the overlap, it was still interesting.

The series really picked up speed in the 3rd episode, which has carried into the 4th episode. Everything makes sense now and is a lot easier to follow, and the action has been pretty consistent throughout.

The CGI is absolutely horrible, but fortunately not used too often after the first episode. There's times where the audio balance is bad, and it's sometimes hard to hear dialogue due to excessive background noise. The acting is top-notch, as you'd expect from that cast.

While it's very action-oriented sci-fi, there's also a mystery/thriller aspect to it, as details about the monsters and their origins are slowly revealed. After the 1st episode I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep watching. After the 4th episode I'm hooked and can't wait for the next one.
