The film was shot over the course of two non-consecutive weeks: one week at Madison, Wisconsin's "Geek.Kon" and then shot over 8 months at local friends' houses, his own apartment, pick-ups at the Ontario Convention Center and a hotel room in Woodland Hills.
While attending as a student at No Budget Film School in 2015, Nimoy pitched an idea about an anime voice actor who attends an anime convention, also explaining certain resources and limitations that'd go with the production. The professor was greatly impressed with his concept and suggested to integrate many of his resources. He wrote a 25-page draft and tried to get people interested in it, but since it occurred to him that he wasn't as active in the anime community as well as getting invited to local conventions, he shelved the script. It was just after he had a brain tumor removed, lost his job and his career resurged with the revival of the show, Digimon, he decided to revive the project.
Graduate students from the University of Madison were flow in to help out on the shoot; most of them lacked professional experience and were unpaid.
Since Nimoy was big in the anime community, he had no problem securing permission from the convention, Geek.Kon, and was able to fly out and film there as well as at the Marriott with all the expenses covered.
Nimoy acquired many of the local participants at the convention to be in the movie.
