June 4
If you have ever watch CNN New Day you are familiar with Chris Cuomo's interview style. Animated, aggressive, at times comical, but always with the purpose of getting the guests to answer the questions America wants to know. While he is never entirely successful at blocking deflections from politicians on both sides, he does tend to produce more headlines than most of his colleagues in the media.
That is why there was some excitement around the debut of Cuomo Primetime on June 4th. The show had two brief trial runs, but this was the full time premiere of the new program. It did not reinvent the wheel, and I do not think that was the purpose. Instead, the show aims to be a source of hard-hitting interviews when primetime cable news channels usually air fluff catered to one party or another.
Getting an interview with Rudy Giuliani was sure to produce soundbites, and that it did. It is not often you will hear a lawyer say, "I swear to God," on live television; in even crazier news the former New York City Mayor happened to be in Israel at the time.
If they can get a big interview every night this show might carve out a niche for itself. That is a tall task though. Chances are this becomes another partisan show by Week 3, appealing to the left like the rest of CNN's primetime lineup, but there is hope based on the first hour.
