beautiful

Beautiful is the only reasonable term about this film . Simple, well crafted, from the drawings to story and atmosphere, its basic virtue remains the status of support for memories about other films, about personal experiences , about psychedelic works. So, a coyote , western atmosphere, a bit of Hamlet and the revenge as duty and source of peace.

Nice blend of the accessible with the 'festival animation' approach

The term 'festival favourite' tends to get a reaction in me when applied to short animations. Mainly I think it is because my experience has been that such animations will be 'difficult', hugely creative, but be more about the experience of watching the animation than about any narrative that can be easily accessed. Coyote came to me with the same sort of tag, and indeed it does have the excesses of imagery and ideas that understandably made it work well to audiences of other creatives. However it also produces a familiar and engaging core story, albeit infused with mysticism and gore. The item on the rear-view, the country-music, the solo driving at night, all things that link to other stories and bring a lot back into this one.

This is not to suggest that the film is some terrific character piece, but it does do enough in the area of story that it engaged me through the elements that did feel more like the 'visual excess for the sake of visual excess' stuff that I associated with festival animations. There is a lot of attention to detail too, and throughout the film looks and sounds great.
