Synopsis

  • The Bar Mitzvah is a movie written by Mark A. Tachna. It is a story of a young boy named Robert, growing up as a reform Jew in a middle class society during the mid-1980's. The story starts out with Robert's birth then quickly skips to him at the later part of age 12 going onto 13. Robert, as an adult mainly through VO, tells the story to his children reflecting back to his life growing up in a family of seven. He has one older brother (2 years older), two older sisters (10 and 11 years older) and his parents. The family houses the father's mother in a section of the house they renovated into an apartment. The most important things in Robert's life are GI-Joes, soccer and not getting beaten up every day at the school bus stop by the school bully. Girls are starting to become an interest to Robert with his eye on Kristy, but because of his lack of size and getting bullied all the time, he lacks self-confidence. Robert goes to two schools, public during the day and a Jewish reform religious school two days a week plus one day on Saturday. He does not fit in very well in his public school because of his religion and he does not fit in very well at his religious school because of the lack-there-of religion. Robert is also a day dreamer and his dreams take him back into biblical stories such as David and Goliath. These daydreams relate to what is going on in Robert's life. The characters are played out by the people in the main story. Robert's main goal at each school is to graduate. Of course, he has years to go at the public school but he only has until his thirteenth birthday, when he will have his Bar Mitzvah and graduate religious school not ever having to return again. So he thinks... Robert's main problems are, he doesn't understand Hebrew and will have to bluff his way thru his Bar Mitzvah. his voice is changing so he has a hard time carrying a tune and facing Jonas, the school bully.
