Delicacies from Florida's "string of pearls"
evening113 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
In my ongoing quest to figure out where I belong geographically, I wanted to be sure to tape this episode on foods of one of the crown jewels of the Sunshine State.

The Keys, 1,700 islands large and small off the southern coast of Florida, offer "spring break for adults all year long," in the words of host Andrew Zimmern. So it's fun to consider taste treats from the destination.

We first encounter conch fritters from Louie's Backyard in Key West, and then we're off to Keys Fisheries in nearby Marathon for stone crabs served up with mustard sauce or drawn butter. Andrew next heads to Hogfish Bar and Grill on Stock Island, for sandwiches featuring the finny fare. After a stop to sample some sweet, wild-caught pink shrimp, Andrew's on to the 5 Brothers Grocery and Sandwich shop in Key West, for its famed Cubanos and cafe con leche. He tops his tour with a slice of tangy Key lime pie, featuring a native fruit that is smaller, sweeter, and yellower than others of its citrus group.

A check of the web confirms these eateries have all survived COVID; I hope to visit them soon.
