Words can't even begin to describe how sad I felt while watching this. The whole anime is pretty darn depressing, but it was in this episode that I pretty much broke down into tears after the weight of everything shown. The girls finally get to see the world before their time, when everything was better, and it's utterly heartbreaking. It is well worth the watch but you will need tissues. Yet, the girls are not sad after watching seeing it all. For them, it was almost like they were there, and that was good enough. The rest of the episode finishes with them discovering what "Cut" is and what they are here for. The girls realize how important they are to each other and strive to keep moving forward despite the fact that they are pretty much the only ones left in the world.
It is so depressing. So sad. But also incredibly beautiful. This episode (and the whole show) is a masterpiece. I definitely recommend it, but only if you are ready to stomach the existential dread that comes with it. Here's to hoping that as beautifully crafted this world is, OUR world never ends up like it.....
