Aggretsuko is a unique cartoon series that has a really great charm about it, even if I wasn't especially drawn to the art style at first. I must say that after a while it truly grows on you and suits the humor and overall vibe of the show really well.
Retsuko, the main character, is a polite, hard-working red panda, dealing with her highly frustrating and sexist work environment by doing death metal karaoke after hours, bonding with her female buds and sometimes getting hungover in the process. It's humorous, quirky and relatable in the sense of pent up frustrations many of us carry in our day to day lives. Through the show, she deals with many different situations, including pressures of society and social standards, dating, body image and the struggle to balance polite submissive business exterior with the internal frustrated feminist persona within. While this cartoon is pretty humorous it also deals with some interesting issues and keeps the viewer ever intrigued.
This show is more adult oriented without being heavily mature. I would define it as being more mildly adult. While it does have elements of adult themes such as mild language, alcohol, clubbing, and work related stresses, nothing very shocking comes to mind as far as rating. Overall this was a very fun watch. I would recommend giving it a chance, especially if you are into Japanese, chibi-cartoonish style anime, comedy, adult humor that hilariously blends cute anthropomorphic people, office work, feminism, modern social issues, and of course...death metal. Something quite different from the HelloKitty company Sanrio. Great fun.
