I Totally Embrace This Weirdness!
gab-147123 February 2021
"Furs by Sebastian" is a very odd trip inside the mind of Maniac. Odd, but delightfully odd. I thought we were finally moving upon a tangent line, but Fukunaga decided to take us on another line...inside the effects of the B pill. What this episode mainly focuses on is a Long Island caper with a lemur at its center. Yes, strangeness is abound here folks. Despite Jonah Hill and his questionable fashion choices (geez, that mullet. Seriously?), this is a truly fun and unique episode. I am not sure if it advances the plot much, but I did enjoy the weird energy this episode gives off. There also happens to be many amusing moments. My favorite is when that one dude was trying to sell Hill's character a bulletproof fur jacket. So, the gist of the plot involves Hill's Bruce and Stone's Linda as a married couple that seems to be in the gutter. Bruce is more of a muted character, but Linda is a wacko with plenty of intelligence (and a character that Emma Stone really embraces). At her work, Linda has this dying woman as a patient and Linda is moved by her story. To grant the woman's dying wishes, she decides to find the stolen lemur and bring it to her daughter. Meanwhile, Agent Lopez (the animal enforcement officer who reallllly wants to be a police officer) is hot on their tails. This is a strange but funny episode. This reminds me a bit of Philip Dick's science-fiction works in terms of genre hopping. We learn some more about Annie's parents, but there seems to be more to this story than what has been told so far. Now this episode plays around with time and genre, and it seems like the next episode will as well. I am fine with that because it allows Emma Stone and Jonah Hill to inhibit different characters. One final thought. I like how the end of this caper is nothing conventional. A rather great episode! My Grade: A-

This episode was by far the best one yet. I love how this show is developing

Warning: Spoilers
I'm know I'm super late to the party, and most people have probably forgotten about this show by now, but I needed to make a review to praise this show about how much it's improved. The first episode was a bit weak, and it didn't really grab me. It was also quite confusing. The second episode was a huge improvement, due to the fact that it focused on Emma stone's character and her past relationship with her sister. Episode 3 was a slight step down, but still very good. It focused a lot on Justin Theroux's character, who is mysterious but also hilarious.

Then we get to this episode, and wow, that was just amazing. Surprised it's only at a 7.7/10. Never have I seen a show go from mediocre to amazing in just 4 episodes, the only show that comes close is Pachinko. Some might call this episode filler, but it's anything but that. It focuses entirely on this simulated alternate reality where Owen and Annie are married.

This episode had a very similar tone to Barry; it managed to blend comedy and drama perfectly. I was a bit confused at first as to why this show was labeled as a comedy, but after this I can see why, cause it was absolutely hilarious. The plot is nonsensical: Owen and Annie have to rescue a lemur and deliver it to Annie's friend's daughter.

This episode took a while to click for me, but once it clicked I was completely into it. When the two sons started dancing I was so confused and I had no idea what I was watching. Then I learned to just deal with this episode's wackiness.

The climax of the episode was absolutely insane. The shootout was filled with great moments, from "we're similar authority-wise!" to the son dancing to his death.

The "delivery" of the lemur scene was also hilarious, the "it's a go f yourself lemur" part had me dying. This was a clever subversion of expectations.

The scene where Annie talks about her sister was surprisingly emotional, considering this episode mainly focused on comedy. It's implied that she remembered an event from her real life that never actually happened in the alternate reality, which is interesting. I wonder what would have happened if Owen and Annie realized they were in a simulation.

Overall, this episode is the one that got me hooked. I'm now genuinely excited to watch the next ones. I had no idea the show would become this good. I feel bad for those who gave up after the first episode. This was a solid 9/10. Keep it up Maniac.

Warning: Spoilers
As it says in the synopsis, after taking the B pill this was a very odd trip that could possibly be the same for both parties or will we see something completely different?

Just have to wait and see for the next episode and see!

Warning: Spoilers
The randomness in this show is genius. "That's a go "f" yourself lemur! ". I believe that should be on a tee shirt. Great casting! Not quite on the level of Arrested Development or Soap.
